32 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2008-09 seams from the merging of possessions. Anyone passing through Pittsburgh and desirous of acquiring kitchen gadgets please call. I am circulating two poetry manuscripts—one chapbook, a small book that is usually 20 to 30 pages and originally meant to be pocketsized, and one a full-length book.” Roger and Jane McLees West celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary with a family gathering at Dewey Beach, Del. Their children arranged for a photographer to commemorate the occasion with a picture of all 23 family members. Both Jane and Roger are partially retired. He is a real estate agent and she does substitute teaching in Fairfax County, Va. They also “foster” dogs as part of their involvement with dog rescue organizations. Gail Casady Macneill and husband Bill have retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Gail participates in a Readers Aloud program at a local elementary school; takes a course at the Univ. of North Florida; serves on a master’s homeowners association committee; and does yoga, pilates, core conditioning and beach walking. She enjoys great health! Their son Brandon, his wife and two daughters have moved to New Orleans for Brandon’s job in the Tulane Univ. athletic department. Their son Craig lives in New York City with his wife, actress Ana Asensio. Craig is a film director whose film “The Afterlight” was privately screened recently at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Ten years ago Joanne Hicks Urgese retired from middle school teaching, and she and husband Joe now live in Palm Coast, Fla. She has faced serious health issues including breast cancer in 1999 and a total electrical heart block in 2006. Now her pacemaker enables Joanne to enjoy golf, bridge, book club, art and travel. Her children and grandchildren live in Newtown, Conn., and Alexandria, Va. In summer 2008, John and Scottie Hansbrough Sneckenberger celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in the Wisconsin Dells with their whole family, including three daughters, a son-in-law, two grandchildren and the fiancé of their youngest daughter Sharon. Scottie had back surgery in May but she is well enough to volunteer with Meals on Wheels and take organ lessons. In December 2006 Ruth Fredericks Frey and Peter celebrated the marriage of their daughter Margot to an architect in San Francisco. The spring of 2007 was traumatic however, as Peter nearly died from a misdiagnosed staph infection of his spine. He was motivated to recover by the Freys’ plans to return to hiking in the Swiss and French Alps. Ruth is a volunteer U.S. Forest Ranger and will soon end her selfpublishing business. She still loves writing, however, and will try to find another outlet. While their son Nathan lives in Portland, Ore., Peter and Ruth enjoy Carbondale, Colo., where they find the outdoors, books, politics and the Internet to be consuming interests. After three years of the snowbird life shuttling between Hershey, Pa., and Leesburg, Fla., Betsy Beachley Winger and Frank sold their Hershey home and settled in Florida. They enjoy the three seasons of weather north of Orlando and are glad that they were able to complete the sale of their Pennsylvania home before the economic problems hit. Jim and Diane McKay Nuner moved to Deming, N.M., in 2004 after spending a year on the road in their Class A motor home. They were seeking a sunny, warm place with low humidity and a low cost of living. After four years of living in the Land of Enchantment they are convinced that they made the right move, though it meant leaving their family behind in the Northeast. In Deming, the Nuners can afford to live in a nice house, go camping in their RV with a club, do water aerobics, volunteer with various organizations and take an occasional cruise. Their cruises have taken them throughout the Caribbean, to Hawaii and next year to England, Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland. Errol and Barbara Richardson Houck are recently retired, having sold a major part of their airport development business to a company owned primarily by Merrill Lynch. They live on the Wye River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and on the east coast of Florida in the winter. Their dermatologist daughter lives in Palm Beach, Fla., and their engineer son is in Fort Pierce, Fla. The Houcks enjoy their five grandchildren, working with their racehorses and sailing their yacht. Having owned eight restaurants, Barbara also still cooks a lot. Kar- Be a part of the Hood Legacy.
