Hood Magazine Winter 2009 - 39

W W W.HOOD.EDU enjoyed, and worked for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, which is where I met my husband Tom. Tom just retired from a 30-year career in law enforcement. He is keeping himself busy and doesn’t miss the job at all (well maybe a little). My daughter Alyson Mary is 26 years old and just finished her time serving with the Army. She served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a door gunner on a Blackhawk helicopter. She is currently working in NYC and is waiting to hear from the FDNY to get to her test number. We have the pleasure of having our precious granddaughter Adrienna Marie live with us. She is 3½ years old and just started pre-school. She is learning Italian, music, art and just having fun being 3! She is truly the love of my life. I would love to hear from some fellow classmates who lived in Coblentz Hall with me. I met so many wonderful people at Hood it would be nice to hear from some of you. I live in Brooklyn and would love to get together with anyone who lives or works nearby. My e-mail address is rottimom54@aol.com. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.” Ann Nicodemus Thompson writes, “I keep busy with my volunteer work at hospice, and Rick and I love being grandparents to little Violet! I baby-sit Violet every Monday. I also teach piano. I sang “Messiah” at Hood in November, as alums were invited to sing this year since USNA couldn’t sing with the choir this year. Singers from Frederick community, Hood alums and Mount St. Mary’s Univ. sang “Messiah” with the Hood choir. It was fun meeting other Hoodies and talking about the good ol’ days.” Nancy Karpeles Marocco M.A. ’84 sends this news: “I am married to Arthur Marocco. As he is retired, we divide our time between our residences in Queensbury, N.Y., and Boyton Beach, Fla. I continue to enjoy my career as a psychologist with the New York State Dept. of Correctional Services. My son David, 21, was recently selected to attend the U.S. Military Academy’s prep school in Fort Monmouth, N.J. He is an enlisted soldier and most recently was based in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, as a Blackhawk crew chief. I am immensely proud of his achievements, and Art and I are looking forward to visiting him at West Point in the very near future. Go Army!” News from Baltimore and the Comer family: Margaret loves Berkeley, Jacob is busy completing college applications and Anne is enjoying 6th grade. Doug is working more in the Middle East (mostly Petra but also some biblical sites in other parts of Jordan) and I (Elizabeth Anderson Comer) am holding down the fort digging around the mid-Atlantic states. We went to the World Archaeological Congress in Dublin in June and partied with our compatriots from all corners of the globe (there really aren’t that many of us) and had fun! I think that conference convinced Margaret that anthropology was the discipline to study at Berkeley! Thanks to the Class of 1977 members for sending your news! Darlington St. West Chester, PA 19382-3212 (610) 429-3202 auntieal@verizon.net The 50th birthday celebrations continued to be shared by our fellow classmates. Sue Campbell Brzezanski (vidasue@aol.com ) celebrated her big day in November with her entire family in Villanova, Pa. Her daughter Marion graduated with a music degree and is currently in Nashville breaking into the world of country music. Daughter Alexa, a sophomore at Frostburg State Univ., hopes to transfer to Hood. Sue still lives near Frederick and is looking to work outside the home for the first time in several years. Debbie Diestel Kindred (dkindred01@rcn.com) had a quiet celebration last January for her 50th—her husband Alex took her out to dinner. She works as a one-on-one teacher’s aide in a middle school while Alex is a stay-at-home disabled computer genius and her youngest son Alex III is a 5th grader, active in sports and music activities. Her three older children are out on their own, working and healthy. Betsy Grasso Sahagun (betsysellshomes@lnf.com) is a realtor in northern Virginia and is available to assist any Hood College alumni or faculty member with their real estate needs in the area. Whether you are looking to buy or rent she guarantees a successful, stress-free experience. Kathy Hogan Rush M.B.A. ’89 sends birthday greetings to the “Lucky Ladies of 1980!” Her husband surprised her with tickets to a Bon Jovi concert. Their son Michael, a high school senior, is captain of his high school swim team and is FINALLY completing his Eagle Scout project. Daughter Kiley, 11, is in middle school and swims, plays soccer and the flute, is a Girl Scout, and is on the school literary magazine staff. Kathy sees Pam Pennebaker Zimmerman a few times a year and her Hood “little sister” Tracy McGuirk ’82. Paula Moran (paula@ summithistory.org) wrote that she and her family will be moving from Ohio to the Norfolk, Va., area next year. She hopes to transition to a new job once they are settled. Laura Shulman (lshulmsn58@comcast.net) hit the big 5-0 in January 2008. She has been living in Manassas since 2000 and hopes to move closer to D.C. in the future. She teaches religion classes at both Northern Virginia Community College and Lord Fairfax. Deb Winther Ferrill (debandmike@pacific.net. sg) and husband Mike have been living in Singapore for the past eight years. She spent her 50th in the U.S. and met up with Ingrid Mues in Leesburg on the big day. She is a curriculum coordinator in a large International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme international school. I continue to celebrate my 50th (in June) for a few more months. Anne Reynolds Gurney and I celebrated together in Annapolis in November for a few days of shopping, pampering and catching up on our lives. In January, Ellen Aries Mulhern, Jak Killeffer Cruthers, Linda Curry Heartfield, Kim Taylor Roman and I will get together for a group celebration in western Pennsylvania. All the best to everyone as we go forward into our next 50 years! Participation: 11.38% Total Class Dollars: $4,078 This class needs a new reporter!
