4 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2008-09 newsmakers Trustee Gaver named Hood board chair A local businessman and current trustee has been named chair of the Hood College Board of Trustees. Mark Gaver, president and CEO of GTI Federal, replaces Martha Church, who served as Hood’s board chair for the past two-and-a-half years. He assumed his new position Jan. 1. Gaver, the current chair of the board of trustees’ facilities committee, was a member of Hood’s board of associates. He is active in several community organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, where he served as president, the Middletown High School Stadium Renovation Committee and the Frederick Chamber of Commerce. Gaver is the founding co-chairman of the Frederick Network of the Maryland Hi-Tech Council. Mark and his wife Donna reside in Middletown, Md. and are the parents of three daughters. “It’s an honor to serve as chair of the board,” Gaver said. “I look forward to working with President Volpe and the administration in leading the College at this critical time.” GTI Federal, founded in 1998, provides information technology services, including software solutions, product assurance, enterprise management, cyber security and document management to federal government customers. Church, who is moving to Florida, is a lifelong scholar with a national reputation in higher education. She served as Hood College’s eighth and the first woman president from 1975 to 1995 and was named president emerita upon her retirement from Hood. “We have enjoyed the opportunity to work with Martha Church as the board chair,” President Volpe said. “We will miss her but we look forward to collaborating with Mark, who will bring energy, experience and a passion to the chair as we continue to move the College forward during these challenging times.” Hodson Trust awards College more than $4 million In December the College’s largest benefactor awarded gifts totaling more than  million for scholarships and campus improvements. The Hodson Trust provided  million of this year’s award to support upgrades to the College’s residence halls and other campus improvements, including the installation of a new outdoor playing field and related improvements. “The Hodson funds will make an enormous impact on the quality of residential life,” President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D. said. “Th is will also be a major boost for our intercollegiate athletic teams and will benefit all students who participate in recreation and intramurals.” The Hodson Scholarship Foundation also contributed more than . million to support Hodson Scholarships, which are awarded to the College’s most academically outstanding students, and more than , for the Hodson Trust Star Scholarship program, established last year for Maryland veterans who have served in the military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Th ree Hood students are currently receiving that scholarship, which pays for  percent of the students’ costs not met by other scholarships or assistance. The Hodson Trust, whose investment in talented students is a top priority, has awarded the College more than  million since . Hood has used this money, donated by the trust and the Hodson Scholarship Foundation, to support scholarships, endowed professorships, athletic programs, research grants and internships, and to build and upgrade campus infrastructure. The trust contributed  million to build the state-of-the-art Hodson Science and Technology Center, completed in . 116th academic year begins with record undergraduate enrollment The College welcomed a record 315 traditional-age fi rst-year students at the annual convocation ceremony in August, which marked the beginning of Hood’s 116th academic year.
