I am writing this column fresh from our 20th reunion, held the weekend of May 31-June 1, 2008. The weekend was packed full of events an activities! My daughter Mackenzie and I arrived late Friday night and after lugging our suitcases up three flights of stairs in Shriner Hall, where we slept, (my daughter wanted the “college” experience) we popped into the all-class party in the dining room in Coblentz Hall. It looked like everyone was having a great time and the disc jockey had the place rocking with some great music. Saturday morning we were up early for the buffet breakfast in the Whitaker Campus Center Atrium where we ate with Liz Stacks Millhouse ’03. The three of us then joined President Volpe for a 2-mile campus Fun Run/ Walk! Mackenzie and I walked a little over a mile and then biked the rest. I had loaded the bikes into the car in the hopes that she and I could bike down to Baker Park. The rain held off and we were off to the park. It was fun to see places that I had last been to 20 years ago! Later that morning Mackenzie and I went back to the campus center where we visited with Martha Church, former chair of the board of trustees, and Julie Brinkman. I visited the bookstore, purchasing yet another Hood “hoodie” for my 11-year-old. She had been wearing one of my vintage ones and I decided she needed one of her own! Julie, Mackenzie and I joined some alums from the Class of 1983 for the Alumnae and Alumni Luncheon. Lunch was great and it was awesome to see all the alums from as far back as 1928 in attendance. We were impressed by the reunion gifts given by the classes of 1958 and 1983. After lunch Mackenzie and I headed over to the library where the new Hood College History Museum was open. It was fun to see Joseph Apple’s desk and the rocker made especially for Margaret Scholl Hood. Lots of interesting photographs and mementos including the certificate from Guinness World Records for the longest field hockey game that some of you may have played in! Later that evening members of our class gathered at Brewer’s Alley on Market St. for a tapas-style dinner. For those of you who have not been back to Frederick since we graduated, Brewer’s Alley is located in the old courthouse building on Market St. We gathered at 6 p.m. for drinks and time to reminisce. In attendance were, Julie Brinkman, Pamela Eyler Noble, Michelle Miller, Charlotte Volatile-Johnston, Daphne Finch Colangelo, Mary Ellen Dennehy Eck, Kristin MacNeill Jones, Susanna Schaeffer Smith, Cynthia Morris Lyons, Eunice Dubuque- Aronson, Alex Hutchinson Kline, Tammie Nicodemus Kincaid B.A. ’91, M.S. ’97, Dorianna Colon Rice, Sandy Nolan Nesbit, and Pam Clopper Snyder. I took a copy of our yearbook as well as personal pictures and mementos from our four years! We had a blast talking and sharing. Some news that was shared was Eunice Dubuque-Aronson has three children—Samantha, 6, Wyatt, 4, and Sebastian, 2. She works for a landscaping company called, “As You Like It.” Dorianna Colon Rice is married to Kent and they live in Frederick. She works for the U.S. Department of Justice. Her e-mail is DoriannaC@yahoo. com. She invites classmates who are in the area to come visit! Cynthia Morris Lyons has two children—Peyten Lynn, 11, and Stephen Edward II, 7. She is currently living in Palmyra, Pa., and works as a full-time swim coach and PIAA field hockey referee. Cynthia and Maria Meluskey Dissinger ’89 see each other on a regular basis. Dorianna Colon Rice shared with me that Kristin MacNeill Jones was voted Teacher of the Year 2008 of the Henrico School District in Henrico, Va. Julie Brinkman reports that she is a volunteer at Edenton Retirement Community where she visits with the residents. She enjoys spending time with others who may not have family in the area to visit regularly. She also visited with Christy Butler Carlson ’90, Tibetha Owen ’90 and Melissa Hubbard-Allen ’90. They regularly get together for dinner since they are all in the area. On Sunday morning there was a fabulous Strawberry Breakfast in the dining hall. Mackenzie and I enjoyed fresh strawberries, waffles and lots of whipped cream. It all brought back lots of memories. I also had a chance to visit with Christy Butler Carlson ’90, big sister Alicia Grumbine-Macom. She was an early decision student who stayed the weekend with Jill Wenger Grose—my roommate—and I in our dorm room. She told me that it was that experience that convinced her to attend Hood. To learn so many years later that we made a difference in a college choice really meant a lot. I also heard from two other classmates that could not make it to reunion weekend but wanted everyone to know what they were up to. Kim Coronel Orben lives in Crofton, Md. She is a budget director for the U.S. Department of Transportation/Federal Railroad Administration in Washington, D.C. She has one child—Alexander Orben, 8. Marianne Smith Cecchini wrote that missing reunion was a tough decision but it fell on the same weekend that her oldest daughter Tyler graduated from high school. They moved to Camp Lejuene, N.C., in summer 2008 where her husband Robert will be stationed. Overall the weekend was a smashing success. I returned to Williamsburg, Va., energized and rejuvenated. I have been busy with my 14th year teaching elementary school, third grade. Mackenzie started middle school and Roman is already planning his retirement! Please be thinking about our 25th—it’s right around the corner! Please continue to e-mail me your updates and information. If you have news please share! Our condolences to Anita Krall Christie C ’07 whose mother Polly died Sept. 1, 2008, in Lebanon, Pa. 1989 20th Reunion June 5-7, 2009 Participation: 6.83% Total Class Dollars: $1,730 This class needs a new reporter!
