Beth O’Malley named as fi rst-ever McHenry Dean of the Chapel For the fi rst time in the College’s history, a dean of the chapel will serve as a spiritual leader and counselor for the campus community. The Rev. Beth O’Malley, a pastoral leader who has more than  years’ experience in congregational pastoral care and campus ministry, joined the College community in August. Her goals include developing and implementing creative programming to enrich the religious, spiritual and intellectual life of students and to serve as a liaison to the surrounding religious community. Former trustee and alumna Christine L. McHenry, M.D., ’, endowed the dean of the chapel position in honor of her parents, Thomas McHenry III, M.D., and Gloria Schmitt McHenry ’, both lifelong supporters of the College. Through her gift and the establishment of this position, McHenry hopes to ensure a strong spiritual presence on campus. “We are tremendously excited about the gifts Beth brings to this position,” said Olivia White, vice president for student life and dean of students. “As our first dean of the chapel, we can continue our commitment to the holistic development of students. I believe that Beth will help students and others find ways to examine and integrate the intellectual, spiritual and personal experience, and add a wonderful dimension to their exploration and growth.” One of the programs O’Malley has implemented since arriving on campus is a weekly lunchtime worship service. Each Wednesday faculty, staff and students gather to reflect on spiritual issues and topics relevant to the campus and world communities and to the college experience. In an effort to deepen an appreciation for different religious and spiritual expressions found in Hood’s diverse population, O’Malley dedicates the first Wednesday of each month to an interfaith service based on themes of shared values. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, O’Malley most recently served as a pastor at the Columbia United Christian Church, in Columbia, Md., where she coordinated interfaith community services, educational opportunities, youth forums and concerts, and offered pastoral care and counseling. She also led a YMCA-based interdenominational Christian campus ministry that served three diverse urban colleges—Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College—where she provided joint educational programs, pastoral counseling and student-centered service projects. The Milford, Conn., native earned a bachelor’s degree in religion and English from Hiram College and a master of divinity degree from Yale Divinity School.
