W W W.HOOD.EDU 7 In Memoriam Hood friend Robert C. McCardell Robert “Bob” C. McCardell, who died January  at age , will be remembered for his courtly manner, gentle smile and generous gifts to his community, including Hood College. His name, and that of the McCardell family, will be forever associated with student scholarships and faculty and staff professional development grants. One of his most recent gifts linked Hood’s past to its future: funds to develop the Hood History Museum and Archives, which showcases the history of the College since its founding in . McCardell’s grandfather, A.C. McCardell, was one of the five founders of the College. McCardell attended Washington and Lee University and served with the U.S. Navy from  to  before returning to Frederick to live in the family home on Rockwell Terrace. A banker and civic leader, he worked for  years as a national bank examiner with the U.S. Treasury Department. In , he was elected to the Hood College Board of Associates and was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement in . In , The McCardell Professional Development Grants Endowed Fund, established by the Hood College Board of Associates in  to provide funds for faculty and staff for professional development, was renamed in recognition of his generous gifts and his family’s contributions to the College. McCardell also took great pride in his sister, Claire McCardell ’, a fashion designer who Life magazine identified in  as one of the most influential Americans of the th century. During Hood’s Centennial celebration in -, some of Claire’s sketches, original costumes and accessories were included in Hood’s Centennial exhibits. “Bob epitomized what we think of as a true philanthropist,” said Hood President Ronald J. Volpe, Ph.D. “He understood the need to secure the future while preserving the past.” To contribute to the McCardell Professional Development Grants program, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at () -, option . Ted Chase appointed associate dean of students, leading student retention, success efforts This summer the College’s Office of Student Life welcomed a new team member to lead Hood’s initiatives supporting student retention and success. Ted Chase, Ph.D., associate dean of students for student success and outreach activities, has more than 30 years of higher education supervisory experience in campus and residence life programming and administration of student affairs policies. Most recently Chase served as the associate dean for student development at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, N.Y., where he supervised all aspects of the college’s residence life program. Chase also served as the associate dean of students for Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., where he directed the student life program, assisted with the management of the college’s study abroad and off-campus programs, advised student organizations and developed and coordinated retention programs for first- and second-year students. Chase earned a master’s degree in counseling and student personnel services and a doctoral degree in higher education administration from the University of North Texas. Professors Derbes, Sandona publish book Two Hood professors have taken an unusual approach to analyzing one of the great monuments of late medieval Italian culture and have recently published their studies. Anne Derbes, Ph.D., professor of art and co-director of the Honors Program, and Mark Sandona, Ph.D., professor of English and chair of the English department, along with Ana Kimmel ’, Marcy Vela ’ and Elizabeth McFadden ’, studied the early th century Arena Chapel, located in Padua, Italy, and its frescos by Florentine painter Giotto. In a project that grew out of an honors class and was  years in the making, Derbes and Sandona pieced together new historical evidence on the chapel’s origins and offer groundbreaking interpretations on the creation of the frescoes in a book entitled “The Usurer’s Heart.” Most traditional studies of the Arena Chapel frescoes have examined the paintings as individual compositions, whereas Derbes and Sandona considered each image as part of an intricate network of visual and theological associations. Derbes and Sandona also edited “The Cambridge Companion to Giotto,” an overview of the life and career of one of the most important masters of early Italian art. Derbes is also the author of “Picturing the Passion in late Medieval Italy: Narrative Painting, Franciscan Ideology, and the Levant” and numerous articles on Giotto and medieval art.
