Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 19) Public Hunting Areas Maryland has over 100,000 acres of public hunting areas called wildlife management areas or WMAs. These areas are open to hunting, trapping and other recreational uses and include many different types of habitat. Maryland also has many state parks and state forests that are open to hunting. You always need to check the regulations to see what areas are open to hunting and which are closed. Fishing in Maryland Maryland has many inland bodies of water where anglers can fish for freshwater fish like trout and bass. However, Maryland is probably best known for the saltwater fishing you can try either in the Atlantic Ocean or in the well known Chesapeake Bay. Anglers can try their skills to catch the favorite fish of the Chesapeake, the rockfish or striped bass. This fish is fun to catch and even better to eat. Young anglers under 16 can fish without a license in Maryland. Maryland also has the “My 1st Fish” award. This award recognizes a new angler’s achievement of catching their first fish. A certificate with the angler’s name, date, species caught, length, and fishing buddy or Captain will be awarded to commemorate the event. If a digital photograph is taken and included with the entry, it will be placed on the certificate. Junior Hunting Program Hunters 16 years of age or younger may participate in the junior deer and turkey hunting days if they have a valid hunting license or are exempt from Maryland hunting license requirements. All junior hunters participating in these hunting days must be with a licensed adult. Resident Junior Hunters (under 16 years of age) can get a one-time FREE annual hunting license, bow stamp, and muzzleloader stamp upon successful completion of a Hunter Safety and Education course.
