Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 25) Getting Close to Waterfowl The most important thing in hunting for ducks and geese is, of course, getting them to come to you. This can be done in two ways. Calling and using decoys are both used to get the ducks and geese to come in close enough to shoot. Calling Calling ducks and geese in close takes a lot of practice. You must know what type of ducks or geese you are hunting and try to sound just like that type of duck or goose. Mallards make a totally different sound than a wood duck and Canadian geese sound different that snow geese. Find an expert caller and have them teach you the different calls and then practice, practice, practice. Snow geese Canadian geese Decoys People have been using decoys to hunt waterfowl for a long time. Why? Because it works! Ducks and geese like to hang out with other ducks and geese. So when they see a lot of ducks or geese in a field or on a lake, they think it is safe and a good place to land. Canadian goose decoys in a field Adding motion to your decoys can really help. Some decoys have motorized wings that spin It is important to use decoys that look like they are doing different things. Some decoys should be feeding, some resting and others watching. Look at the picture of the decoys, can you see decoys doing these things? Outdoor Kids Club Magazine Duck and goose decoys along a stream www.outdoorkidsclub.com 25 http://www.outdoorkidsclub.com
