Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 28) OUTDOOR HEALTH & SAFETY Campfire Safety Fire is a dangerous thing. You should never try to build a fire by yourself. A grown up should always build and start the campfire. A fire can quickly grow and seriously burn you and even spread to other areas and start forest fires. Building fires is for grown ups only!! Always use a fire pit or fire ring. Many parks and campgrounds provide fire pits or fire rings for building campfires. If there is no fire ring or pit, clear a circle on the ground and surround the circle with rocks or stones to keep the fire from burning out of the circle. No playing or running near a campfire. When a campfire is burning the logs and ashes are very hot. If you are playing or running near the campfire and fall into the fire, you will be burned very badly. Campfires are to sit around and enjoy. It is not a place to run and play. © istock/Noam Armonn A fire should always have an adult watching it. Whenever a campfire is burning, there should always be a grown up watching the fire and the children around it. Leaving a fire by itself can sometimes allow the fire to spread outside the fire ring or pit. Always put out the fire. When you are done enjoying the campfire, be sure a grown up puts out the fire. The best thing to use to put out the fire is sand or dirt. Water can be used but you must be careful. Only leave when you are sure the fire is completely out. Campfires can be a great place to visit and share time with your friends and family. If you follow these campfire safety tips, your next campfire should be fun and enjoyable, and remember, don’t eat too many marshmallows!! 28 Outdoor Kids Club Magazine www.outdoorkidsclub.com © istock/morganl Never build a fire by yourself! http://www.outdoorkidsclub.com
