Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 35) What do you use? The most common way to catch perch is to use a rig called a “perch spreader”. This is a set up that has two hooks and many times a flashy blade to get the perch’s attention. You can use minnows or shiners on the hooks as bait. How do you catch them? On large lakes, it is best to use a boat with a fish finder to find schools of perch. Once a school of yellow perch is found, it is best to anchor and fish near the bottom using shiners or minnows. A large weight is used to get the hook and shiner to the bottom and then the bait is worked up and down off the bottom until a perch takes the bait. Raising the rod tip will set the hook and then just reel the perch in. In ponds, the perch also like cooler water. Early mornings or evenings are typically the best time to catch pond perch. They will stay around structure like trees or rock pile. One of the best ways to catch pond perch is to use a slip bobber and a small hook with a minnow or shiner. By moving the slip bobber stopper, you can change the depths at which you fish to find the depth the yellow perch are using to feed. There is not much to catching perch once you find them. Perch swim in schools which means they travel together. Once you find a school and catch one perch. There are many more down there to be catch. Keep your perch rigs baited and hang on!! With any luck at all, you will bring home a nice mess of perch to fry and share with your family. www.outdoorkidsclub.com Outdoor Kids Club Magazine 35 http://www.outdoorkidsclub.com
