Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 5) A Male deer is called a Buck Bucks grow a new set of antlers every year. Antlers start growing in spring and finish growing by September. As the antlers grow they are covered by a fuzzy skin called velvet. The velvet is rubbed off in the fall after the antlers become hard. The antlers will fall off in late winter. Bucks use their antlers to rub trees and fight other bucks during the “Rut”. A female deer is called a Doe Does give birth to 1, 2, or 3 babies in May or June, they are called fawns. A fawn is usually reddish in color with small white spots. These spots help hide and camouflage the fawn in the wild. ©istock/Glenda Powers They will loose these spots in the winter when they are 5-7 months old. Did you know??
