Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 7) Alarm Snort This is the sound does and bucks make when they sense danger. They snort and blow air out their nose making a loud blowing or snorting sound. This sound tells other deer there is something wrong or danger is near. This is a call you do not want to hear when you are hunting. Many times deer make this sound if they smell you but do not see you. They will usually run away shortly after making the snort. > Buck Sounds Buck calls and sounds are different than doe calls. Bucks make sounds for different reasons than the does make their sounds. The buck’s sounds are made mostly during the rut or the deer’s breeding season. Copying these sounds can make for an exciting hunt if a buck hears your calls. © istock/ Paul Tessier Buck Grunt A buck makes a grunt for the same reason a doe makes a grunt. It is to tell another deer to “come here”. The main difference is that a buck grunt is much lower or deeper than the doe grunt. The older and bigger the buck, the deeper the grunt is. You can use a deer grunt call to make a buck grunt and get a buck to come and see what deer is calling. Just be sure not to make a too deep of grunt or that may scare away small or younger bucks! © istock/ Bruce MacQueen Tending Grunt This is a grunt sound that bucks make when they are following a doe during the rut. When bucks make the tending grunt, he is trying to get her to stop. To make this call, you make several, soft, short grunts right after one another. This can be a really good call if you are on the ground hunting and walking through the leaves. A buck may hear that and come to see where this strange buck is walking or trailing a doe. www.outdoorkidsclub.com Outdoor Kids Club Magazine 7 © istock/ Mike Coddington http://www.outdoorkidsclub.com
