Outdoor Kids Club NovDec - (Page 8) Sparring sounds These are sounds of two bucks calmly pushing each other around by their antlers. This sound is common in the early season when bucks are living together in groups. This sound can be made using rattling antlers, real antlers or rattle bags. To copy sparring sounds, it is important to slowly rattle the antlers together or slowly roll the rattle bag between your hands. This is NOT a buck fight and is not a real loud, crashing antler sound. > Sounds bucks make when they are MAD!!! There are two sounds that bucks make when they are really mad and upset. These sounds are usually made in the middle of the rutting season. Snort-Wheeze This is not a very common sound but bucks do make it when they meet another buck in their area. They make a loud snort sound and then a wheezing sound by blowing air out of their nose. This call can really scare smaller, younger bucks. If they hear this sound they usually take off running. If two big bucks meet up and they snort-wheeze at each other, a fight may be next. Aggressive Rattling This sound is made when those to big bucks start fighting. When bucks fight, they crash their antlers into the other buck’s antlers making a loud rattling sound. You can make this sound by crashing real or rattling antlers together very hard and loud. Remember, you are trying to make it sound like two bucks are really going at it. When a buck hears two bucks fighting in his area, he will quickly come to see who is fighting in the area and try to chase them away. 8 Outdoor Kids Club Magazine www.outdoorkidsclub.com © istock/ Paul Tessier © istock/ Tony Campbell http://www.outdoorkidsclub.com
