However, deer calls and rattling can work at certain times of the year and help you see more deer. Here are some tips to remember when you are trying to call in deer. • Learn what the different deer sounds sound like. Listen to recordings of deer sounds or calls. You can hear the deer calls mentioned in this article on our website under the News and Updates page. Click on Deer Calls on that page to find the deer call sounds or go to www.outdoorkidsclub.com/deercalls • Do not call too often. Deer do not make sounds all the time. If you are calling too much, the deer will figure out the sound is probably not coming from another deer. Only call every 15 to 20 minutes. • Keep the deer from smelling you before they see you. Try to stay down wind (keep the wind blowing from the deer to you) when you call so they do not smell you. Stay clean and try to keep your “human” smell down as best as you can and use deer scent to cover your scent and fool the deer’s nose. • Practice, practice, practice. Practice making the sounds with your deer call and rattling antlers or rattle bag. The more you practice, the more you will sound like a real deer and the better your chances of calling the deer to you. • Be safe. Because you are copying the sounds real deer make, you must be ready for deer to react and come to you. If you call on the ground, you must be alert and hunt with a grown up.
