SEGD_Design - (Page 21) no. 23 Short List American Dreams Venice has its canals, Paris its Eiffel Tower, and Minneapolis? It has one of the world’s largest systems of skyways, those iconic glass and steel pedestrian bridges that keep downtown workers warm during the long Minnesota winters. Recently one of the skyways was transformed into a public artwork for the first time in the city’s history. Speaking of Home, conceived by photographer and public artist Nancy Ann Coyne, featured fantastically scaled portraits of 23 immigrants to the Twin Cities and text panels telling their stories. The 13- by 10-ft. black-and-white photographs were printed on translucent fabric and installed in a 150-ft.-long portion of a central skyway. They provided the skyway’s 18,000 daily users an evocative 18 segdDESIGN look into the lives of immigrants who now call the Twin Cities home. At night, the skyway was transformed into a giant architectural lightbox, with the images appearing to glow above the downtown landscape.
