The multi-million-dollar facility occupies three stories on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Island and features a floor-to-ceiling waterfall, rooftop cabanas, fire pit, and VIP lounge. San Diego Museum of Man 17 Located beneath the ornate 200-ft. California Tower in Balboa Park is the city’s only museum devoted to anthropology. The landmark, with its Spanish colonial and mission style architecture, was originally constructed for the 1915–16 Panama-California Exposition. Ivy Hotel 12 The Ivy Hotel is a “world-class, high-style luxury destination.” It’s one of my favorite places in downtown San Diego. California Tower 18 The tower and dome housing the San Diego Museum of Man, the historic Cabrillo Bridge, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion (one of the world’s largest outdoor pipe organs), were some of the few permanent structures built for the 1915 Exposition. Mingei International Museum 19 Also in Balboa Park, this museum is dedicated to the art of the people (mingei) from all eras and cultures of the world. It houses dynamic, changing exhibitions of historical and contemporary folk art, craft, and design. Petco Park 14 PETCO Park differentiates itself from other retro-style Major League ballparks by taking design inspiration directly from the surrounding city’s environment. The stadium’s design is specific to San Diego and is meant to evoke the sandy color of San Diego cliffs and beaches, the blue of the ocean, and the white sails of boats on the nearby bay. (Photo: Suzanne Ito) San Diego Museum of Art 20 The region’s oldest and largest art museum includes a fine selection of European old masters, 19th and 20th century American art, an encyclopedic Asian collection, and growing collections of contemporary and Latin American art. It is also located in Balboa Park. It was the first aerothemed museum to be accredited by the American Association of Museums (1986) and is nationally recognized as one of the country’s premier aerospace museums. Balboa Park 16 Promenade through our truly stunning cultural hub, Balboa Park, which features the Prado and Arboretum. It is the nation’s largest cultural park, home to 15 major museums and numerous performing arts venues all situated amidst inspiring landscaping. (Photo: Joanne Dibona) Museum of Photographic Arts 22 One of the few institutions in the country devoted to the photographic arts, MoPA houses more than 4,000 works, representing the entire history of photography, its aesthetic movements, and technological advancements.
