Newsroom HLAA is Working for You I am a teacher in Georgia and we have United Healthcare Insurance. Both my husband and daughter have hearing loss. I was very excited to learn and actually witness United Healthcare pay a portion of my daughter’s new hearing aids. The United Healthcare Insurance paid $1,500 toward her new hearing system. This was a first for us. We want to thank HLAA for helping advocate for people with hearing loss. I know our family is grateful (not to mention our wallet). Thanks for all that you do! — Charlsie McElroy Over the years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had difficulty in conversations, especially with soft spoken people, but did little to address his hearing loss or prevent further damage. “My hearing grew worse as I was subjected to high decibels on tour shows,” he states. “In my 30s, I began making records in a way that would expose me to hours and hours of loud sounds in the recording studio.” Even with the increased loss he experienced, Stills was reluctant to commit to wearing hearing aids. When he finally did get hearing aids he began to wear them on stage which allows him to turn down his monitors so that he can sing, play and hear the band. Conversation is now clearer and more comfortable for Stills. “When you don’t take care of your hearing loss, you can get isolated, fall into depression and it’s a domino effect. You are cut off so you fall into depressive cycles and don’t know why you feel so bad but you do,” explains Stills. “And it has so much to do with the fact that you can’t participate. There are a myriad of reasons to take steps to address hearing loss sooner rather than later. Nobody should wait to take the steps you can take to improve your life. DRF 2009-2010 Grant Recipients Announced Deafness Research Foundation (DRF) awarded 17 grants of up to $25,000 each and one Centurion Clinical Research Award of $50,000 to outstanding young scientists in the field of hearing and balance research. Each year DRF awards research grants to young investigators who are exploring new avenues of hearing and balance science. These funds will support research in the following areas: • Fundamental Auditory Research: development, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, anatomy, and regeneration biology • Hearing and Balance Restoration: infants, children and adults • cochlear implants/surgical therapy for otosclerosis, hair cell regeneration, hearing aids, and medical therapy • Hearing Loss: aging, noise-induced, otosclerosis, viral infection (sudden deafness), ototoxicity, temporal bone pathology, otitis media, cholesteatoma, and tumors • Vestibular and Balance Disorders (dizziness and vertigo, Meniere's disease) • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and Hyperacusis (decreased tolerance of sound) Deafness Research Foundation was founded in 1958 and has awarded nearly $24 million through more than 2,200 research grants to researchers who are dedicated to exploring new avenues of hearing science. This seed money has led to dramatic innovations that increase options for those living with hearing loss, as well as protecting those at risk. With the potential for hearing restoration through regeneration biology, the scope of DRF funded research has expanded enormously. DRF sponsored the 2009 Research Symposium at the HLAA Convention this past June in Nashville. [News from Oticon] By the Time We Got to Woodstock …Stephen Stills Stays In Tune with His Music and His Life As one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s “100 greatest guitarist of all times,” Stephen Stills contributed vision and musical genius as a founding member of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Despite hits that still rank among the best loved songs of a generation—Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Teach Your Children, Woodstock, Long Time Gone—Stills continues to work at his craft, creating and playing music designed to entertain and inspire audiences. His own history is closely entwined with the history of rock and roll and surprisingly, with the hearing loss that he first experienced as a child. “My hearing loss was first spotted when I was nine years old and living in Louisiana. This was in 1954 and a little truck came to the school to give the children physicals. The doctor noticed a hearing loss in my right ear and told my parents to ‘keep an eye on it’,” says Stills. 26 Hearing Loss Magazine
