CHARMING Most would agree, one of the most attractive features beyond Hood College is its environs, namely the City of Frederick and the surrounding region. From campus, a five-minute walk through Frederick’s toniest neighborhoods and past a number of the city’s 2,500 historic properties, is rewarded with a welcoming and vibrant downtown. It’s a place that just a few years ago was the first city in Maryland to earn the prestigious Great American Main Street Award, an award given by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to cities that have “made a comeback and have transformed their older and historic downtowns and shopping districts into vibrant places to live, work and play—without sacrificing what makes them special.” It also was named one of America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations and a Preserve America community. Thanks to a broad mix of shops and restaurants on Market and Patrick streets, and Shab Row on East Street, Frederick is not only a destination for tourists and shoppers from around the region, it has also become a great place for Hood students to eat, shop, grab a cup of coffee or just hang out. “Frederick’s charm and warmth make it a terrific place to live and work,” said Jennifer Fair ’03. “The atmosphere downtown is like no other town or city I have been to, whether it be day or night, or summer, winter, spring or fall, there is always something to do.” Specialness in downtown Frederick also comes in the form of live entertainment at places like the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, where talented local thespians put on shows in their renowned black box theater space; there is fine art at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center on the beautiful new Carroll Creek promenade, and a list of shops (more than 100), restaurants (30 and growing), antique dealers (more than 200) and other businesses too numerous to mention. Tracey Carter ’05 remembers enjoying many excursions into downtown Frederick. “One of my favorite things about Frederick is the variety of affordable things to do,” she said. “And a stroll through the art shops and antique stores is completely free and a great way to spend an afternoon.” In and beyond the city there is abundant opportunity to see where history was made. Frederick County has been a crossroads of American history—at least for the better part of the last 250 years. It is just shy of an hour’s drive to the nation’s capital and Baltimore, and a mere 30 minutes to nearby Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry. And it is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Sitting at the picturesque foothills of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin mountains, hiking, camping, mountain biking, skiing and just about any other outdoor activity is as close as a 15-minute drive from campus. There are 41 miles of Monocacy River for canoeists or boaters, and two state parks (Gambrill and Cunningham Falls), one federal park (Catoctin) and a 7,000-acre forest (Frederick City Cooperative Wildlife Management Area) within a stone’s throw of the campus. ■ Allen Kees ’11, Allyson Austin ’10 and J’Air Brady ’10 share a meal at La Paz, one of the many popular downtown destinations for Hood students.
