16 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2010 Eric Kindahl, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, and numerous Hood students have participated in an Environmental Protection Agency-funded collaborative venture to restore Carroll Creek Wildlife Park in Frederick to its fullest ecological potential. Since 2002, more than 300 Hood undergraduate students have assisted with stream stabilization and habitat restoration, invasive plant eradication and reforestation efforts that will ultimately improve the water quality in the Chesapeake Bay, and establish more green space for wildlife and outdoor recreation. “The benefits are enormous for everyone,” said Kindahl. “Students don’t just read about environmental science, they actually do it. And the community sees that the College is a critical part of a practical, community-based project with near- and long-term benefits for Frederick residents.” This year Hood marks the 10th anniversary of its Center for the Humanities colloquium series, funded in part by a prestigious National Endowment of the Humanities challenge grant. The series offers a distinguished roster of events, including lectures, symposia, film series, concerts and poetry readings. “The Colloquium has enormously enriched the intellectual life of this campus,” said Rebecca Prime, Ph.D., Sophia M. Libman NEH professor and director of the colloquium. Devin Gaither ’10 and Danielle McFall ’10 performed in Hood Theatre’s fall 2009 production of Harold Pinter’s “Old Times,” staged in the Avalon Performing Arts Studio. The theater was established through the generosity of Beryl Pfizer ’49. The Frederick community also benefits from this academically and culturally rich environment. Each year hundreds of area residents attend concerts, lectures, performances and exhibits on campus that feature local talent as well as universally recognized personalities. In recent years, lectures by the controversial philosopher Peter Singer, political philosopher Cornel West, capital punishment activist sister Helen Prejean, NPR’s “Radio Kitchen” hosts Al Spohler and Jerry Pellegrino and chief judge of the Mary- Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), the first African American to be elected as speaker pro tempore in the Maryland House of Delegates, spoke at Hood in October 2008 as part of the College’s yearlong series of events that marked the 40th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. land Court of Appeals Robert M. Bell have attracted overflow crowds. Art exhibits, lectures and workshops have showcased such internationally renowned artists as Robert Turner, Jack Troy, Ian Gregory, Micki Schloessingk and Xiaosheng Bi. Devoted professors are not alone in their efforts to bring academically and culturally broadening opportunities to students. For decades, the generosity of alumnae, alumni, community members and organizations have supported music programs, lecture series, worldwide studies, hands-on research and more. Alumna Beryl Pfizer ’49 is one of many benefactors who sees the value in offering programs that augment the college experience and encourage self-discovery. The retired journalist and Emmy awardwinning producer of the children’s television series “Ask NBC News” endowed Hood’s Beryl Pfizer Theatre Production and Programming Fund and the Pfizer Scholarship for Theatre Minors to do just that. “I don’t feel the main purpose of college is to prepare a person for a job,” said Pfizer. “I was drawn to the start up of the theater program, now well established, with the hope that it will fill a need for any student who chooses to take part in it, whether their participation leads to a career or simply becomes a memorable experience that lasts a lifetime.” ■
