W W W.HOOD.EDU Soccer student-athletes Brittany Hurt ’10 and Shawn Fernholz ’10 unveiled the lettering at the Oct. 23 dedication. A stunning new artificial surface playing field that rivals the best in the nation is now home to five Blazer athletic teams and marks the completion of the first phase of the transformation of Hood’s athletic facilities. The summer-long, $2.6 million project includes a new locker room facility and entranceway, picnic area, landscaping, storage facilities, a multipurpose scoreboard and a portable press box. Upgrades to the adjacent softball field are in the works as well, including the installation of new dugouts for both the home and visiting teams. The College’s Division III field hockey, women’s and men’s lacrosse and women’s and men’s soccer teams will practice and compete in the complex. Hood’s intramural teams will also use the facilities, its coaches will offer summer sports camps there and the complex will be available to outside athletic teams when not being used by the College. “It’s 100 times better than I thought it would be,” said field hockey team captain Brandy Noel ’10. “The new field and locker rooms mean more to our student-athletes than a facility,” said head men’s lacrosse coach Curt Foxx. “It is a unifying force that has not only greatly improved recruitment and retention, but also team morale and unity.” Foxx’s assistant and former head coach at Hood, Eric Dummann, echoes that sentiment. Megan Cahill ’13 and the field hockey team played the first game on the new turf field against Salisbury University Sept. 1, 2009. “We want to provide the best facilities for our student-athletes because if the facilities are top-notch, you will want to achieve something top-notch.” “The excitement about the new field goes beyond the coaches and student-athletes,” said head field hockey coach and assistant director of athletics Staci Brennan. “The parents, fans turf, when the top team in NCAA Division III, the Salisbury University Sea Gulls, traveled to Frederick Sept. 1 for Hood’s season opener. Prior to the start of the game, the Blazers joined President Ronald J. Volpe and trustee and former White Blazer Girl Betsy McCain McAlpine ’51 for a special ceremony. Using the very field hockey stick with which Apple taught the Hood students the game in the early 1900s, Volpe scored the ceremonial first goal to inaugurate the new field. “I was thrilled to see the new turf field and was there for the wonderful dedication,” said former student-athlete and 2008 Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Joy Beveridge ’82, who
