22 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2010 Trustee emeritus Al Shockley P’91 addressed the crowd that gathered for the Nicodemus Athletic Complex dedication, while men’s basketball team member Stone looked on. played in the alumni field hockey match in October. “To play on the field was amazing and even more so, playing with the Hood athletes,” she said. “They were so welcoming to us old folks,” she joked. I am looking forward to watching many more seasons and to playing more alumni games.” October 23 will also go down as a historic day in the College’s annals when President Volpe officially dedicated the athletic complex in honor of two of Hood’s most treasured and loyal supporters, Charles Nicodemus, H’05 and Kathryn Nicodemus, H’05. “In recognition of more than a quarter century of their contributions to Hood College, their ongoing financial support of Hood College student-athletes, their commitment to all aspects of Hood College, and especially athletics, their exceptional passion, loyalty and love for the students, faculty and staff of Hood College, the Nicodemus name will forever be linked to this stunning athletic complex,” said Volpe. But Volpe’s vision for the grand complex stretched beyond the brilliant green surface, as his intention on that day was also to create awareness for a steadfast campaign for a new multipurpose recreation center. With the aid of two first-year basketball players, Justin Stone ’13 and Stacey Jones ’13, Volpe unveiled three artist’s renderings depicting this next piece of the Nicodemus Athletic Complex. Designed to accommodate possible future expansions, the 35,000-40,000-square-foot facility at the northeastern of the complex will not only feature a basketball court, but also a lobby or atrium, locker rooms, offices, seating for up to 2,000 and a hall of fame display area. The new athletic space will better accommodate Hood’s intercollegiate athletic teams, in addition to serving as a first-class venue for intramural activities, summer sports camps and physical education classes. This endeavor, which will also house numerous campus events such as rallies, concerts and conferences, will undoubtedly raise the already sterling profile of the College, thus cultivating a richer relationship with the Frederick community. “It will bring the campus community together around a common interest of health, wellness, athletics and recreation,” said head women’s basketball coach Jay Butler. “Very simply, athletic arenas are a rallying point of any and all colleges across the nation.” The proposed recreation center will be built at the northeastern end of the new artificial turf athletic field.
