Thomas ’41 Scholarship; and Marlene Grossnickle Young ’76 for The Virginia Shaver Harshman ’41 Scholarship Fund. Martha Simington Cole ’50 made a generous gift to The Elizabeth R. Bower Prize in chemistry. Davis World Scholars This year 25 students from 20 countries have been identified as Davis World Scholars, thanks to a generous gift from the Davis United World College Scholars. Life Technologies Supports Summer Science Research For the second year, the Life Technologies Foundation, the parent company of Invitrogen Corporation, has made a generous donation to support Hood’s prestigious and competitive Summer Science Research Institute. Last summer, 10 faculty and 17 students engaged in scientific research in academic disciplines from biology and chemistry to archaeology and psychology. Hanson Lecture Series Established Hood College is the beneficiary of an endowed fund to support the annual Hanson Lecture Series featuring a prominent national or international speaker. The lecture series is made possible through a gift from the Barbara Esmer Hanson ’45 and Robert D. Hanson Fund of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. Hood will host Elizabeth Gilbert April 14, author of “Eat, Pray, Love,” the international bestseller translated into more than 30 languages and made into a movie starring Julia Roberts. The well-known novelist will also participate in a discussion that day with Hood students enrolled in Associate Professor Amy Gottfried’s fiction and poetry class, and will present two public lectures April 15 as part of the annual Frederick City Reads program. Carhart Gifts Strengthen Two Endowed Funds Hood College has received additional gifts from Homer W. Carhart H’07 to support The Homer W. Carhart & Carla A. Rollandini Thanatology Lecture Fund and the Summer Chamber Music Festival. Hodson Trust Endows Nursing Professorship Hood College has received a generous gift from The Hodson Trust to partially endow The Hodson Trust Professorship in Nursing, the second faculty position to be endowed by The Hodson Trust; in 1985 the trust established The Beneficial Chair in Economics. The endowed professorship will strengthen Hood’s proposed bachelor of science in nursing degree completion program, a collaborative partnership between Hood, Frederick Community College and Frederick Memorial Hospital that was announced Jan. 22. This newly established endowed fund will enhance the academic program while helping to meet the costs and expenses related to teaching and program initiatives. For a member of the faculty, it will be an honor and privilege to hold the title of this newly established professorship. With the establishment of this endowed professorship, and thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends, Hood now has 11 named endowed funds that directly support faculty positions or academic departments. Hood’s first endowed chair, The Whitaker Chair in Chemistry, was established in 1957 by Mr. and Mrs. Uncas A. Whitaker and their daughters, Ruth Whitaker Holmes ’55, H’93 and Portia Whitaker Shumaker ’55. The most recent fund, The McHenry Dean of the Chapel, was established in 2008 by trustee emerita Christine L. McHenry, M.D. ’73, in honor of her parents, Gloria Schmitt McHenry ’42 and Thomas McHenry III, M.D. The others are: The Giles Chair in Early Childhood Education, established in 1987 by Anne Giles Whitman ’52; The Virginia E. Lewis Chair in Political Science, established in 1985 by alumnae and friends; The Sophia M. Libman National Endowment for the Humanities Professorship, established in 2000 by Frank Libman in memory of his wife, Sophia Meredith Libman ’37; The Hildegarde Pilgram ’31 Chair in History, established in 1989 by Hildegarde Pilgram ’31 through a bequest from her estate; and The Andrew G. Truxal Chair of Economics and Sociology, established in 1959 by alumnae and friends. Hood also has a number of endowed lecture, performance, research and support funds, all of which are earmarked to support and enrich specific activities or academic programs at the College. While some of these funds are fully endowed, others are not. All remain open to receive additional gifts, either through a direct gift, a planned gift or a bequest.
