W W W.HOOD.EDU they were a favorite snack for her friends. We should all have the optimism of Rose Watkins Mott who last year planted an oriental persimmon tree that should bear fruit in three years. She still rides the lawn mower and drives her car. She is looking forward to her granddaughter’s visit from England in January. Louise Nickey Hoffacker lives independently in her cottage at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford, Pa., and still drives her car. Her two sons are dentists in Hanover and she has three grandsons. Ruth Swomley Lugar is in her 10th year as a resident of Homewood at Crumland Farms, which she loves because of the proximity to Hood. She and her daughter Linda enjoy concerts, lectures, chamber music and travel logs at Hood and Frederick Community College. Ruth says she gets tired but I am not surprised considering all the committees on which she serves. Kitty Wiest is in assisted living at The Village at Sprenkle Drive in York, Pa. My wish for you is that you have a happy and healthful new year! Fairmount Ave. State College, PA 16801 (814) 238-9470 “I hope you hear from many others in our class,” was Miriam White White’s last sentence. I have heard from one-third of the living Class of 1942 and thank each of you for responding. What a record considering that many of you had 90th birthday celebrations. Miriam White White also writes that there is not much excitement to report but “life is good and that’s worth a lot.” Hurrah for you, Miriam! She was off to Kentucky for a large family reunion at Thanksgiving, which included her two brothers, “one of whom” (catch the phrase I chide my grandchildren for not knowing what a preposition is and the case that follows) lives in Kentucky. Obviously, many of you, as Betty Lou Bliss Allen writes, still have happy memories of Hood and classmates. She recalls Bunky Wilson Hansen corralling the troops for late night “educational” sessions. As Dorothy “Dottie” Schock Horne reports, she is “so glad I had Hood in my life, as it added so much.” She has stopped playing tennis (so did I!). She still loves her retirement at Bentley Village, and is still doing art and charity work. Her four children are married and she has 10 grands. Elizabeth “Dillie” Dillingham Savage is grateful that her children and grandchildren have jobs. (Aren’t we all?) She sends warmest thoughts to those who remember her. Dorothy “Dee” Lauer Lowe was getting ready for Thanksgiving, as the family was expected from various corners of the country. As Dee writes, “Enjoy each day.” (That’s worth including in our daily thoughts.) Margaret “Peg” Lincoln Bradner finds life in retirement slower, although she still clips from newspapers and magazines, and continues her prospect of accumulating records. She expressed concerns about the serious expressions on the faces of some of the Hood professors. (I have noticed this in Happy Valley and wonder whether there is much joie de vivre!) Natalie Meyer Noll had a happy 90th celebration in June. Never thought she would reach 90. Natalie shares Happy Valley with me. She was born in State College. We had a growing Hood club since a number of Hoodies came to Penn State. Sadly, it fragmented due to many other involvements. Marion Smith Wood celebrated her 90th birthday and 66th wedding anniversary (lucky you!). Her daughter planned a weekend—children, grands and eight great-grands participated. Congratulations, Marion! Frances Hervey Huntoon enjoys life at Meadwood in Lansdowne, Pa., as there is always something to keep her busy. In the summer she plays golf at Stone Harbor. She sees Marion Smith Wood. Jean Shaffer Cline writes from California that life there is pleasant … not too exciting, for which she is grateful! Her son John is in California but her daughters are in the East. She and Dottie Horne correspond. Anna Messerly Sullivan went to South Africa for a safari. She said it was an exciting opportunity to see those animals out of a zoo environment. (I remember well our advantage of safaris when Kent taught at the Univ. of Nairobi in Kenya.) Anna sees Betty Gibboney Wilson who lives in a retirement center in Belleville, Pa. She was off to Ohio and Georgia (keep those creaky bones active!) until 2010. Edna Alice Cramer Hoffman took time off from her many community activities to undergo back surgery. (My friends tell me that is no fun.) Edna Alice hopes to return to action in the spring. (Good luck, Edna Alice.) Her granddaughter April Hoffman ’11, is a pre-med student at Hood. Her grandson Andrew is starting the college search. Edna Alice writes, “…it would be great if the Class of ’42 could have one more reunion.” Sadly, we lost Jane Simon Knox in August 2009. Jane had spent the last nine years with her daughter who wrote me. Our condolences also to the family of Martha Pease Gamble who died Aug. 27, 2009, in Bowling Green, Ohio. I am eager for us to stay in touch as long as we are able. My own life is comprised of visits to all five children, grands, plus great-grands. I saw my fifth great-grand in Michigan at Thanksgiving—three girls, two boys! I am truly blessed, for my five youngest of the 13 grands are in Happy Valley. My special task is, “Grandmommy can you…?” Of course I can!
