W W W.HOOD.EDU Cumber Allen in Old Saybrook, Conn. Jane and husband Peter have successfully raised two daughters and are enjoying their empty-nester years. In January Heidi had a wonderful dinner with Carol Fleming and her husband Scott in Kingston, Pa. They had not seen each other in almost 20 years! They said it was great fun to catch up and share old memories, and both commented that “we have not changed since Hood!” Carol and Scott continue to enjoy their pastoral roles at Presbyterian churches in the Scranton area. Check out Hood College on Facebook. It’s a great way to find old friends, rekindled fond memories and stay connected. Donna Parker Bannwolf wrote, “My son Steven is a high school freshman at a public magnet school, specializing in studying other cultures and sustainability in the environment. He’s also a cadet with the ROTC. We recently visited Top Gun in Fallon, Nev., and had a behind-the-scenes tour with a Navy lieutenant friend. Steve wants to attend the Naval Academy. My husband and I are running a software technology business called Pass2Play (www.pass2play. com). Kids have to earn time on computer games by passing academically appropriate content online. I still own my PR firm and it’s going well after eight years. I manage publicity for a downtown boutique hotel and a high-tech homeland security gate operator. I write alumni profiles for Trinity Univ. each month and conduct training classes in speaking skills and handling the media. I was recently invited to train in Japan. My father passed away in February and it was a tough loss. He was 86 and told WWII stories right up to the end. He’d been sick for several years but we miss Pop Pop. Larry and I had a very long year of going to the doctor’s three times a week. His amputation is slowly healing and we feel like his cancer is gone. We look forward to him getting his prosthesis sometime in 2010. That day cannot come soon enough! Until then, we are blessed to have spent time with our family and friends in 2009. Our granddaughter Madeline is 18 months old and is so dear. We look forward to Santa coming to her house this year! Life is good!” Giving Participation: 16.35% · Total Class Dollars: $4,390 Elizabeth Anderson Comer 4303 N. Charles St. Baltimore, MD 21218 (410) 243-2626 ecomer@eacarchaeology.com Our column begins with some sad news. Megen Mack Opsahl reports, “Faith Voth Stone’s husband died unexpectedly of a heart attack Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009. David and Faith married just days after our graduation and were a couple with that magic something. They packed a lot of travel, adventure and happy times into their 32 years of marriage. Faith and David were living in Bangalore, India, while David shared his talents with Cisco Systems.” In August, Megen met Faith and Kim Anderson McDonald ’78 in Napa Valley. “We sipped and ate our way through the week. The wine, food and company were wonderful. We had a group photo taken with Mr. Jelly Belly after a tour of the Jelly Belly Factory. Looking at the photo now I’d say that I have the jelliest belly of the bunch! If any classmates come to the Seattle area, please look me up. I would love to see you and introduce you to this most wonderful part of the country. I fill my days volunteering for Northwest Airedale Terrier Rescue, transporting and fostering Airedales. We have fostered 26 in the last 24 months! Mike and I also help a local shelter when they have litters of pups. We bottlefed Wilbur and Templeton every four hours 24/7 for a week. It reminded us of feeding our preemie sons who are now 23!” Class fund agent Megen closed by saying, “when you win the lottery, remember Hood College!” Sharon Thorpe Kourtz sent a quick note to report her son Collin is a freshman at Loyola Univ. Maryland. Denise Swan Isacson reported, “Life here in Richmond Hill, Ga., outside Savannah, is busy as ever! As a senior at RHHS, Liv is currently involved in ‘The Great College Search.’ My mother, Liv and I went to Hood’s open house Oct 24. It would have been better timing had we been able to see Dr. Karen Klisch inducted into the Hood Athletic Hall of Fame Nov 7. But Liv now has a good feel of what college life is like at a small school like Hood. And who knows? Maybe she’ll follow in her mother’s footsteps. Margaret Anderson Shumaker ’78, who lives in Oregon, came with her daughter Anna to Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Savannah for a bit of history, food, culture, tourism and family meetings. A side trip to Richmond Hill would not be complete without a stop at the Historical Museum—housed in the original kindergarten building built in the 1930s by Henry Ford for his employees’ kids. Maggie and Anna learned (in about 2 minutes—it’s a small town) why Richmond Hill, Ga., has been called “the town Henry Ford built.” After 31 years at Delta, airplane travel is something I try to avoid on my days off. However, in the upcoming weeks, the Swan family will meet at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio to see the Change of Command ceremony as my brother Guy takes over the Fifth Army. At that time Guy will be promoted to lieutenant general. We are so thankful Mom and Dad are in good health and will make the trip from New Jersey. So life is good—for now!” Greg and Kas Kluth Rohm have somehow finally been freed from the daughters’ college tuition burdens with their shirts still on! Greg is doing a lot of traveling for business and Kas is having fun tagging along and exploring while Greg is in meetings. When not at work, they have been familiarizing themselves with various rails-to-trails bike paths in Maryland. Lance Thompson reported he is still trying to get to Texas—pending the sale of his mother’s luxury condo by Baker Park. To soften his despair he went to Cancun for a couple weeks in September/October and said, “I went to ruins, went swimming in underground caves (in extremely cold water), snorkeled on the island of women and, of course, ate and drank too much! I am going to Jamaica for 10 days Jan. 7-17. I’ve got to find ways to reduce the stress of this poor economy and very slow housing market. Ha! Anyway, life is good for me right now. I’m still riding the Harley Sportster and Honda Helix, too. I still don’t have nor want a computer, cell phone or answering machine at my house and I still work/volunteer at the Community Free Clinic in Hagerstown two or three days a week.” Ever organized, Jane Ezzard Ingalls sent exciting professional, family and Hood news saying, “I am in the middle of a career shift that I want to share with you. In addition to singing opera at the Kennedy Center with Washington National Opera (13 seasons and counting), I am returning to voiceover work, providing spoken word narrations for all kinds of media in English and Spanish. To hear some examples, visit my new Web site at www.janeingalls. com, where you can also find backstage photos from the opera. Our younger daughter Georgia transferred to the Univ. of Maryland for her sophomore year. She loves the environment and is majoring in criminal justice. Ryan, our older daughter, is playing a fifth year of Division I basketball at Lehigh Univ. in Pennsylvania. She is working on a master’s degree in education and plans to coach and teach. As far as Hood connections are concerned, I hear from Allison Coerper several times a year and we had a visit with Sheila Edwards ’76 and her husband Donald Richter in May. They were in town to see their daughter Kati and they all came to the opera! A Hood assistant professor in the Spanish department that you may remember, Graciela Mestroni de Olivares, was also in town in October with her husband Javier from Buenos Aires. During our seven-hour catch-up dinner, I learned that she is a full-time interpreter and translator who works all over the world.” The Comer family is happy and healthy. Doug continues to consult at various World Heritage Sites around the world and I (Elizabeth Anderson Comer) continue to dig a little closer to home! I am currently working on a site along the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., in advance of the construction of the new 11th Street bridges. We located the original shoreline of the river (before changes in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries) and found prehistoric pottery and other artifacts! Margaret is now a sophomore at Cal Berkeley and loves every moment of it! She will be abroad her entire junior year studying in Moscow in the fall and Bordeaux in the spring. She has declared anthropology as her major (we did not see this coming but are thrilled!) with minors in Russian and French. Jacob is finishing his first semester at Brown Univ. and loves it! During parents’ weekend we drove straight to the Providence Mall and bought him a heavier coat … he wasn’t quite prepared for a Rhode Island winter! Anne is in seventh grade and is taking voice lessons at the Peabody Institute. I thought having just one child at home would mean I wasn’t as busy but I am still waiting for any sign of a slowdown! I get to Frederick every week or so to visit my mother and family. If you are in the area do not miss a chance to dine at Volt, the new restaurant on North Market Street! It is fabulous! Thank you to all for sending me your news! If you did not receive my e-mail asking for news, please send me your e-mail for the next request! Kelly Walfred Miller and husband Edward are proud to announce the birth of their granddaughter Afton Grace June 9, 2009, to their oldest son Christian and his wife Amanda.
