48 HOOD MAGAZINE | WINTER 2010 Class of 1997 Alumna Inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Dominique Bustamante Thayil ’97 graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in environmental science and policy. A three-sport athlete for the Blazers, Thayil participated in field hockey, lacrosse and soccer during her time at Hood. But it was her fortitude as a soccer pioneer at Hood that distinguished her as an exemplary Blazer student-athlete. Thayil was instrumental in founding the women’s soccer club at Hood in the early 1990s. After one season as a club sport, soccer was elevated to varsity status in the fall of 1995, the same year Hood joined the Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference. In the inaugural AWCC tournament, Hood defeated Wells College, 3-2, to capture the conference crown. Thayil captained the Blazer soccer squad for three years and was the first Hood soccer player to record a hat trick with three goals against Trinity Oct. 27, 1996. After graduating from Hood, Thayil coached and taught at Frederick area high schools and is currently an advanced placement environmental science teacher at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick. since she has been a stay-home mom, helping out in her husband’s business. Congrats to Deanna Schenck French on her recent move to Lancaster, Pa., with family David, Ethan, Ryan and Aidan. Enjoy your new home! Angela Schmuck Bond was laid off in January and is making the most of it by going back to college (Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa.) for her teaching certification in elementary education. She had been considering a career change from interior designer for about four years and decided the lay off was the push she needed. She is hoping to complete the certification in spring 2011. She is also enjoying being home with her 4-year-old daughter, though it is a challenge to study and entertain a 4-year-old at the same time! Overall, the layoff was a good thing! Laura Stull Reifsnider and her husband Clint welcomed the birth of their second daughter Isabella Diane Dec. 15, 2008. Chantelle Kimm earned a master’s degree in southeastern European studies in 2006 and was married to Thomas Kelsey in December 2008. Chantelle is currently working on her doctoral degree in politics at the Univ. of Oxford in England. Next year she and her husband will be moving to his next diplomatic post in Athens, Greece. Kimberlee Rhodes Cornett recently accepted a new position as director of strategic investments for the Kresge Foundation. She will be relocating to Michigan with her family in January. Jennifer English Keefer wrote, “An update in my life … I am still married to my husband of 17 years, Terry. (We were married my senior year at Hood.) No kids, just a furry beagle mix who thinks he is a child. I have been an R.N. at Frederick Memorial Hospital for the past 10 years and have two national certificates—one in orthopedic nursing and one in medical/surgical nursing. I am currently back in school for my B.S.N. through Chamberlain College of Nursing. I would love to hear from any of my fellow Hood grads. Seana Rafferty-Hanson wrote, “I worked at a variety of jobs after Hood, including as administrative assistant for the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1664, where I met my husband Stu, who served on the executive board. I went on to attain my property and casualty insurance license and worked as an account executive until I was forced to retire following a back injury and four unsuccessful back surgeries. We moved to Falling Waters, W.Va., in 2003. I am busier now than I was when I worked full time. I am legal guardian and caregiver to my mother, who suffers from MS and dementia. I would love to hear from you.” Michele Martin wrote that she will be leaving the National Aquarium in Baltimore after 12 years to take a new job with the Department of Defense at Fort Meade in January. She said it is a longer commute but provides substantially better pay and prospects for advancement. I, Sally Altland Mason, have been married to Dean for 15 years, and we have one daughter Emma, who is almost 11. I teach eighth grade language arts at Red Lion Area Junior High and also serve as department lead. My family is eagerly counting down the days until our second Disney cruise in March. On this cruise, we hope to swim with the stingrays in Grand Cayman, as well as visit ruins in Cozumel and tour Key West. We are also looking forward to a February ice fishing trip to the Thousand Islands area of upstate New York on the St. Lawrence River. This is where Dean’s parents live but Emma has never experienced ice fishing in below zero temperatures.
