Scaffolding Industry - September 2008 - (Page 35) SIA 36th Convention & Expo Training Courses Offered There were four separate training courses available at the convention: • CPT Frame: Bob Jakubczak of Action Scafflod Manufacturing and Dave Glabe led a class of 17 local and international students. Much thanks to the expert facilitation of Bob and Dave, and to Howard Schapira for hosting the event at his Waco facility in Denver. • Suspended Scaffold Training: Harold Gidish led a small but mighty class of students. As always, the students enjoyed the comprehensive course and Harold practiced his “spanglish,” and learned some new terms in Spanish. • System Endorsement: Thanks also to Hardy Roloff, of Waco Scaffolding, for stepping in to provide a short endorsement course in System Scaffold Components. • Train the Trainer: The final course of the convention was a two-day instructional skills workshop. Eleven students from three countries participated. The practice presentations were given in two different languages (English and Spanish), and the English-speaking folks got a sense of what it must be like to be a student in another country. Amazingly enough, we learned that math can be a universal language. The SIA Training Committee As always, the Training Committee met again to move forward on the continuous improvement of the SIA Training Program. Members of the training task force were presented with the criteria and guidelines for writing effective test items. Thank you to all of the committee members for their hard work and dedication to the development of the SIA Training Program. The committee reviewed the applications of and approved five new Accredited Training Institutes. Congratulations to the following organizations: • All American Scaffold (Des Moines, IA) • Desert Specialty & Rigging (Las Vegas, NV) • ENTEC (Mexico City, Mexico) www.scaffold.org • Safety Support Services (Moreno Valley, CA) • Benchmark Industrial Projects (Edmonton, AB, Canada) ATI of the Year! Waco Scaffolding once again was the ATI of the Year, having trained 457 students during fiscal year 2006-07. A close second was Atlantic Scaffold with 398 students. The total number of students trained so far this fiscal year is now over 2,500, over double the number of students we have trained in previous years. Although there is still much work to be done, with the continued growth and development of the SIA, we are paving the way to be the worldwide standard for scaffold safety.
