2♠ on my left. My partner passed
in tempo, and RHO passed. I had 17
points and stoppers in all suits, including the ♠A, so I bid 2NT. Everyone
passed, and I made my contract. An
hour after the game, this person called
to ask me about my bid of 2NT. This
person said, "In all my years playing
bridge, I have never seen anyone make
a bid like you did." I replied, "Now you
have. But it sounds like you are calling
me a cheater." He said that he wasn't
calling me a cheater, but that my actions were suspicious!
I was very upset by this accusation.
I have never cheated at bridge. I love
the game very much and have never
cheated.
How does an honest, aggressive bidder not be accused of cheating?
MYRNA SILVERMAN

Ed: Players are reminded that it is not
appropriate to accuse others of cheating. Suspicious behavior should be reported to the club director (or National
Recorder for tournament play). Publicly
accusing others of cheating is, itself,
conduct subject to discipline.
The July issue of the Bridge Bulletin was devoted to cheating at bridge?
You must be kidding me! Now, if we
are playing for money, you may get my
attention. But cheating for masterpoints? Come on! Why? In case you
do not know it, masterpoints have no
economic value whatsoever. They let a
person know where (s)he stands in the
mastery of a very complex game. As a
result of your cheating, you may earn
more masterponts than I have playing
online, but so what? Face-to-face at the
bridge table, I will beat the pants off
you every time.
Maybe it's an ego thing. Oh, boy! You
can go to your grave knowing that you
cheated your way to Life Master or
whatever. Maybe it's a sexual thing.

8 Bridge Bulletin September 2020

Because of your points, the beautiful woman/handsome man will play
with you. But how long do you think
that will last? About as long as it takes
for them to realize that you are not as
good as your masterpoint total might
indicate?
To those of you that lose sleep worrying about cheating, get a life! This game
is supposed to be fun. Enjoy it! Cheating is so insignificant and meaningless
that I see no reason to even discuss it.
Now, when I see that second ace of
clubs played in the same hand, I may
change my tune.

On second thought ...

We hear that bridge is a dying game,
but you would not guess that if you play
online. In fact, the internet has made a
large difference for the game, and during these coronavirus days, the attendance has multiplied. The prime site is
Bridge Base Online. I play frequently
in an event called a "speedball," a timed
event, on the hour every hour. Twelve
hands, comprising four rounds of three
deals each, are played in an hour. Often,
players are slow, and at the end of a
round, the directors have to adjust the
score depending on how the play went
for an unfinished deal. The following
deal occurred July 9. I was East:
♠ 10
♥765432
♦-
♣KQ8752
♠ Q8754
♠J9632
♥QJ
♥ 10 9 8
♦KJ6
♦874
♣J93
♣ 10 6
♠AK
♥AK
♦ A Q 10 9 5 3 2
♣A4
South reached 6NT, and my part-

ner led a low spade. Declarer won and
cashed all the clubs, discarding four
diamonds, and played a heart. At this
point, time expired.
The directors gave us an average
score. I looked at the hand and saw that
in the three-card ending with South
holding the ♦A Q 10, West just had to
hold on to the ♦K J and a spade, and
declarer could not come to 12 tricks.
I argued with the directors and asked
that the score be adjusted down one
for North-South. It turns out that the
directors had made the correct ruling
based on the holding when the time
expired. While the contract could be
made, it was not clear if declarer would
find the line, hence the average scores.
Later, I realized that South can make
6NT double-dummy. In this ending,
West is squeezed:

♠Q
♥-
♦KJ6
♣-

♠-
♥7654
♦-
♣-

♠A
♥-
♦ A Q 10
♣-

♠J
♥ 10
♦87
♣-

If West keeps one spade and three
diamonds (as in the diagram), South
plays the ♠A and the ♦Q to endplay
her. If West instead keeps the ♦K J
and two spades, South plays the ♦A
and another diamond to set up his 12th
trick.
A total of 244 pairs played in the
event. Four pairs made 6NT, while
seven pairs went down. Twenty-eight
pairs went down in 6♦, while nine
pairs made 6♥. The vast majority were
in 3NT or 5♦.
