Saluting Change Agents
Over the years, this magazine has evolved with the times from " Most
Influential Minorities in Cable " to " The Diversity List. " While it was
originally a vehicle to recognize people of color in influential industry
roles-and we still do that to some extent-we're now placing a greater
emphasis on how the honorees are helping to shape diversity, equity and
inclusion in their organizations and beyond.
There are important conversations and moves to be made, with these
women and men leading the charge. The prominent executives on our Diversity
List are empowering a new generation of leaders, creating diverse
talent pipelines, forming responsive employee resource groups and holding
their companies accountable for measurable DEI progress-all while
exceeding sales goals, closing big deals, upgrading to next-gen technology
and generally keeping the cable business at the top of its game.
You may notice this year we decided not to rank executives, essentially
because ranking someone above someone else seems 100%
counterintuitive to the entire DEI movement. We did highlight 10 execs
who we feel have made substantial headway in DEI. They've encouraged
brands to spend more with Black-owned media companies, instituted
hiring benchmarks, expanded the diversity of programming and asked us
all to do better. We then spotlight the rest of our amazing Diversity List in
alphabetical order.
This issue also spotlights a few individuals and organizations that are
DEI changemakers. D&I Champion Tara August of Turner Sports is bringing
her team along with her as the organization creates new opportunities,
such as a summit attended by 200 HBCU students looking to join
the world of sports. Nickelodeon Animation's Ramsey Naito, Cablefax:
The Magazine's Mentor of the Year, has overseen the inclusive hiring of
more than 700 artists, while LGBTQ Exec of the Year Joseph Schramm,
founder of Schramm Marketing, produced a virtual TV summit focused on
LGBTQIA communities.
Meanwhile, Nat Geo's " Field Ready " program
isn't just schooling promising filmmakers, it's putting
them to work. Cox Communications launched
its AAPI Lotus Employee Resource Group last year,
becoming an important outlet and educational
resource during a time of heightened violence
against Asian Americans.
There are countless inspiring stories between the
pages. Our hope is that they will spark reflection
within each of us.
