Let's Go Crazy
Dearly Beloved...
We are gathered here today to get through
this thing called 'cable.'
The Independent Show, where this magazine usually debuts, was to be held in
Prince's hometown of Minneapolis. To be honest, I wanted this issue to have a cover
that paid homage to the late pop star's " Purple Rain, " complete with references
to how broadband is speedier than a " Little Red Corvette, " digital equity is today's
" Diamonds and Pearls " and how " Nothing Compares 2... Gigabit Fiber. " And, of
course, thanks to the Top Ops in this issue, no one has to surf the web like it's
" 1999. " It seemed fitting.
There was a lot of back and forth between our team as Delta variant cases began
rising, and we realized there was a good chance the show would move virtual and a
Minneapolis-themed magazine cover wouldn't make sense.
Maybe I'm just too demanding. Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold... OK, OK.
I'll stop. No doves ever cried. We completely understand ACA Connects and NCTC's
decision to take The Independent Show virtual because safety comes first.
While it's not exactly Princely, I'm still happy with this year's cover. But what's
most exciting is what's inside the issue. Our Operators of the Year, Charter Communications
and TDS, have set the standard during a challenging time for the entire
country. They both continued to serve customers and communities, while building
out and experimenting in new technologies.
Comcast and Hotwire epitomize what it takes to really make a dent in broadband
adoption and education, earning the companies the distinction of being our firstever
Digital Equity Award recipients.
Companies like Mediacom and GCI are lighting the pathway to 10G, while individuals
such as Conway's Crystal Kemp and Kathy Zachem of Comcast show us how
to lead with heart. I really enjoyed chatting with outgoing Cox CEO Pat Esser, one
of our Lifetime Achievement honorees, on his decades in the industry-all at one
company. Fun fact: he's never had an employee agreement, and neither do other
Cox employees. " We work here because we want to be a part of this, " he says.
That's what it really comes down to for most of us. We want to be a part of this
crazy thing called cable/broadband/connectivity or whatever
the industry's dubbing
itself these days.
Congratulations to all our
Top Ops honorees! And since
I still have trouble sometimes
acting my age and not my
shoe size, here's a peek at
the magazine cover that
almost was! I hope to soon
see you laughing in the
purple rain.
