MY SMALL, FAST (GAY) WEDDING
Less than two weeks ago, I married Emily, my partner of five years. The
glorious day was a whirlwind and I'm thankful to our photographer for capturing
all of the moments I'm sure to have forgotten in the flurry of feelings.
It would be easier to say this ceremony was the result of years of
planning and careful decisions. But the truth of the matter is the path to
the altar was fueled by fear the Supreme Court could strip so many of their
ability to marry who they love. Still, we led with love, putting together a day
of activities for a small group of friends and family that allowed us to wear
our wedding dresses proudly without feeling the weight of the world on our
shoulders.
It seems fitting that the timing of this milestone moment in my personal
life coincided with the debut of Cablefax's inaugural Pride List. This section of
our magazine is dedicated to celebrating standout LGBTQ+ executives across
our industry who are doing a lot more than waving a rainbow flag. They're
fighting discriminatory laws, advising company policy on inclusive benefits
and actively working to increase representation across film and television. It's
an addition we're proud to make to our annual Diversity List, which continues
to be dedicated to commemorating the work, stories and experiences of
those championing the advancement of DEI efforts within our industry and
our world.
Despite the many advances our society has made since the days of Jim
Crow law, the " yellow peril " and Stonewall, our nation still has a lot of work
to do before we can call it a truly equitable society. The honorees included
within these pages are devoting their time, energy and talents to lifting others
up and creating a better, more inclusive future for the next generation of
diverse individuals.
Since you all weren't on hand to offer
toasts at my wedding, allow me to take the
opportunity to lift a glass to each and every one
of our honorees. The world grows brighter each
day that they decide to bring their true selves to
work, stand proud in their identities and create
the spaces they didn't have when they were
growing up. Thank you for the opportunity to
celebrate you now and for all the days to come!
