Cablefax The Magazine - April 2014 - 3

Above it all
Yet again, we salute the giants, the movers, the shakers, the disrupters, the inspirers, the motivators and yes,
even the terminators whose power, innovation and occasional ruthlessness ranks them above and beyond The
100. Is it in poor taste to celebrate those who have everything? Probably. But we can't help ourselves.
IN THIS ISSUE
4 Editor's Note
As the cable
universe continues
to expand, so shall
the Cablefax 100.
6 The 100
It's the list to top
all lists, and we
even asked about
twerking this year.
Yes. We really did.
28 The Regionals
Too often
overlooked, these
regional execs
make it happen
in the field where
competition lives
and breathes.
Chase Carey (News Corp)
Only Rupert ranks higher than Carey, and there's a
reason for that. Carey may not be a Murdoch, but
he is trusted, tested and tethered to the DNA of
News Corp-and it shows.
John Chambers (CisCo)
Cisco is forever indebted to Chambers' positive leadership
style and unwillingness to cede ground despite
the toughest competitive environment in decades.
Philippe Dauman (ViaCom)
With Nick back in fighting shape, Dauman still
faces operators' wrath over programming costs.
We're guessing this savvy exec has a few tricks
up his sleeve.
Charles & James Dolan (CableVisioN)
Despite a slew of executive departures and management
shuffling over the last couple years, the
Dolans continue to execute. The recent promotions
of Brian Sweeney and Kristin Dolan will add more
stability as Cablevision charges forward.
Charles Ergen (DisH/eCHostar)
A true entrepreneur, Ergen continues to position DISH
for the future, with an eye on the existing business as
well as new areas such as wireless and beyond. No
one should count Charlie out. Ever.
Randy Falco (UNiVisioN)
Univision has shored up its leading position with
Hispanics, even hitting the millennial market with
its ABC News jv Fusion. Falco's leadership ensures
Univision's continued relevance and power.
A Note to
reAders...
Thanks to everyone who
took the time to fill out our
extensive (and often quirky)
questionnaire! To see the
full responses in all their
CableFAX 100 glory, please

John Hendricks (DisCoVery)
Hendricks may be riding off into the sunset after a long
and illustrious career, but this soon-to-be-former chairman
of Discovery Communications won't likely retire to
the rocking chair. He's just too darned Curious...
Bob Iger (DisNey)
Whether it's the continued dominance of ESPN,
growing ratings at Disney Channels or smart
acquisitions around Marvel and Lucasfilms, Iger's
power and foresight knows no limits. With a new
contract that keeps him at Disney through June
2016, we think the force is strong with this one.
James Cox Kennedy (Cox)
One of the smartest things this heir to the Cox
Enterprises empire ever did was keep Pat Esser in
charge of this conglomerate's cable assets.
Cablefax: The Magazine
April 2014
Peter Rice (Fox Networks GroUp)
With a big promotion in 2013, Rice now oversees
the sprawling Fox Networks Group, answering only
to Chase Carey. Rice's ascension was a long time
coming, and we don't think he's done climbing.
Randall Stephenson (at&t)
U-verse continues to punch and kick incumbents in
several markets, and Stephenson's dedication to its
original vision has silenced many of the early doubters.
U-verse ain't going away, and-7 years into the
job as chairman/CEO-neither is Stephenson.
Michael White (DireCtV)
White has turned DirecTV into a brand powerhouse
nationwide. And he's no slouch when it comes to
negotiations (just ask a recently storm battered The
Weather Company).
Oprah Winfrey (owN)
Oprah's one-woman brand and sheer force of will has
translated to higher ratings and revenue for her network
OWN, which finally seems to have caught fire. ■

Greg Maffei (liberty meDia)
The dealmaking skill of John Malone's right-hand
exec has won the respect of everyone in the
business-time and time again. And now Comcast
wants to shed 3 million TWC subs. Hmmmm...
John Malone (liberty meDia)
Don't you hate it when some young kid sneaks in at
the last minute and steals your deal? Malone's efforts
to combine Charter and Time Warner Cable may have
fizzled, but he's still looking for subs-and the industry's
got plenty of potential sellers out there.
Lowell McAdam (VerizoN)
With its FiOS juggernaut, Verizon continues to be a
formidable cable competitor that peeled away video
subs from incumbents wherever it operates. McAdam
deserves much credit for guiding this massive ship.
Les Moonves (sHowtime/Cbs sports)
If it wasn't for Les, it's unlikely that the retransmission
consent debate would be alive and well in Washington.
So you should thank him, right?
Rupert Murdoch (News Corp)
He's still Rupert, and his assets are still enormous. Not
only does Fox News continue to rake in the ratings and
dough, but Murdoch's ability to put the right execs in
the right jobs has helped News Corp and its Fox Networks
Group amass incredible power and influence.
