Hundreds of executives forced to abandon ship and carve out a new existence. They must
learn to adapt or they're voted off.
Ay ay oh ee oh ee oh ee ah ah ay ay oh ee oh ee.
If that doesn't ring a conch shell, then you obviously haven't watched as many episodes of
" Survivor " as me. But don't worry. There are 319 available on Hulu to get you caught up,
proving my point that we're in very different waters than fi ve or even three years ago. The
ship that so many execs in the industry have sailed for years has capsized.
Rules about video are being rewritten faster than Jeff Probst can say " I'll go tally the votes. "
Traditional MVPDs now have virtual MVPDs to battle for immunity. Linear networks have to
contend with digital forces and the pressure of a shrinking bundle. Addressable advertising
and advancements in measurement are changing the currency. Then there's the technology
gales bringing forth DOCSIS 3.1, 5G, artifi cial intelligence, ultra high-defi nition, the Internet
of Things and the capacity to do so much more than ever before.
Throw in retransmission consent, wireless plays, regulatory battles and demanding
consumers, and we're looking at something way tougher than any old deserted island CBS
could conjure up. Say hello to your Cablefax 100. These are the men and women staking
their claims on what the future is for this industry. They make bold moves-whether it's
buying up digital properties, nixing a 65-year-old trade show, moving a linear network to
digital, investing big bucks in gigabit speeds, and so on. They're the reason you won't see
cable or whatever we're calling it these days marooned. Not everything's going to work the
fi rst time. But like with the castaways on our reality TV escapism, if they keep rubbing those
sticks together long enough, they'll get a spark.
Unfortunately, I haven't been unable to convince Mark Burnett to cast the industry's power
players in his next reality outing. But we're offering the next best thing with our annual ranking
of who's who in the industry. Between these pages you'll fi nd out why we feel they are
deserving and how they are plotting the industry's course.
And yes, there's also the fun stuff-like what TV family their own families
most resemble and how they choose to celebrate (or ignore) their birthdays
each year. Some even ventured a guess at what @realdonaldtrump would
tweet about them. I can't speak for the president, but in our book they're
winning. Bigly.
