85 | KID POWER
86 | LET'S MAKE A DEAL
Margaret Loesch
Title: President/CEO, The Hub
Years in Cable: 18
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: It's
hard to listen when talking.
Why Her? Loesch knows how to get things
done. A year after launching The Hub as
a 24/7 network, the tot-driven channel is
now in 61 million homes and has shown consistent audience gains over its former
identity as Discovery Kids. With its stable of original shows based on kid favorites
like " My Little Pony " and " Strawberry Shortcake, " family game shows built around
co-owner Hasbro favorites like Scrabble and nostalgia programming including " The
Wonder Years " and " Happy Days, " Loesch hopes to parlay The Hub's notable trend
in co-viewing among parents and kids into increased ad sales.
Giving Back: Loesch remains active in the ongoing rebuilding efforts
of her hometown of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, and more
recently Hurricane Irene.
The one thing I tell my kids about success in life: Don't give up on your
dreams. Life will produce many hurdles but also many opportunities. Open
every door of opportunity because it only takes one " right " door to make
your dreams come true!
Worst thing I ever heard someone say in a meeting: Three equally awful
things: 1) From a 30-something network executive (no kidding): " Who was Jack
Benny? " 2) From a 20-something mid-level studio executive: " What was Watergate
anyway? " 3) From a successful producer: " Didn't you used to work with my father? "
Bands I would actually go see live: Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Lady
Antebellum, The Rolling Stones, Eminem, and if Freddy Mercury was alive
today, definitely Queen! ◆
87 | BOO!
David Howe
Title: President, SyFy and Chiller
(pictured, far left)
Years in Cable: 15
Education: Reading University, U.K.
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: Keep calm
and carry on.
Why Him? In case you missed him at Comic-Con,
Howe oversees program development, marketing
and global brand strategy for the sister networks
across all media. He also tends to Syfy and Chiller's
public affairs initiatives. In short, he's the one who's
shaped Chiller into a 24/7 scare-fest, including the
introduction of feature-length premieres every Friday
night and a broadening of international content

Dan Moloney
Title: President, Motorola Mobility
Years in Cable: 25-plus
Education: BSEE, MBA
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: Life is short-make every day count.
Why Him? Motorola is in the throes of one of the most evolutionary, read:
frenetic, periods in the company's history. Fortunately Moloney has an
iron constitution. In just the first nine months of 2011, he and his senior
management team formed newly independent company Motorola Mobility
Inc, launched a host of new consumer devices and generated the interest of
a little company by the name of Google. Moloney, of course, is wooing operators
evolving to IP-based technology with gusto, making the coming year
one to watch as the maze of applications, bandwidth, rights management,
content management and cloud technology unfolds.
Patent-Mania: Under Moloney's leadership, MMI has built an
intellectual property portfolio including 1,900 patents focusing on
multimedia, home gateways, content mobility and security.
Year Ahead: Moloney is on a roll. We're expecting at least one big
operator deal.
Favorite meal I can also prepare myself: Anything on the grill.
Biggest innovation in cable over the last year: Secure streaming to
multi-screens
Favorite " going out " town: Barcelona
The one thing I tell my kids about success in life: Success is a
journey, not a destination
How many companies have you worked for since graduating
from college? Two... one of them just changed names five times! ◆
and reality shows. After a successful rebranding,
SyFy is steaming ahead with an aggressive
programming slate including all 31 episodes of
" Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, " which
it began airing this spring, original series, and
proven reality shows like " Ghost Hunters. "
New CFO: NBCU brass this summer promoted Rob
Spodek to take on SVP/CFO duties at SyFy and Chiller.
Year Ahead:
We like Howe's plan for more
originals, but " Caprica " proved there's no such
thing as a sure thing in original programming-a
lesson he won't soon forget.
The one burning question I have for Siri on
my iPhone 4S: Do you come here often?
The one thing I tell my kids about success
in life: I don't have kids. So instead, I once tried
to teach my dog how to play dead. Then he got
back up. That's success!
December 2011
Worst thing I've ever heard someone say in
a meeting: " Why are we having a meeting? "
My best technique for deterring time-wasting
office visits from co-workers: My assistant
scares them off with a Harry Potter wand.
My favorite business and/or motivational book:
" Orbiting The Giant Hairball. " I just like the title.
If I invented my own app it would:
Read minds. ◆
