28. THE SMOOTH OPERATOR
30. SATELLITE
OFFICE
Greg Rigdon
TItle: EVP, Content Acquisition, Comcast Cable
Education: Oberlin College, Princeton
Why Him? When was the last time Comcast had a big public blow-up with
a programmer? Sure, some of that's because of the company's leverage,
but Rigdon deserves credit as well. He stepped in quietly and efficiently from
Charter last year to fill the shoes of Matt Bond, who left to handle programming
negotiations on the content side for NBCU. Significant recent deals for
the MSO have included Disney and Scripps, with analysts noting in Q3 that programming increases
have come in slightly lower than forecast. As with everyone, prices will continue to rise, but Rigdon
and his team are making sure they get plenty of extras, such as digital rights. That Disney deal allows
Comcast to distribute the content across any platform, bolstering TV Everywhere. He also drove
the launch of four new minority-owned networks for Comcast (one of the FCC conditions of the
NBCU transaction) and was instrumental in the creation of streaming service Streampix.
29. THE CLASSIC
STRATEGIST
Peter Stern
TItle: EVP/Chief Strategy,
People and Corporate Development
Officer, Time Warner Cable
Number of Years in Cable: 11
Education: BA, Harvard; JD,
Yale
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: You get out
what you put in.
Why Him? In short, Stern has been busy. Facing
furious competition from online video streaming
platforms such as Hulu, he is re-shifting TWC's
focus toward residential broadband service. He
has also beefed up TWC's business arsenal. The
acquisition of data-cloud carrier NaviSite marked a
significant addition to the company's offered voice,
video, security and storage services. And going
forward, Stern will spend much of his time cooperating
with Verizon Wireless on a joint wireless
entertainment package.
The biggest innovation in cable over the
last year has been... National Ethernet-facilitates
our move way up market in business
services.
Gangnam style or Mozart? Mozart-I majored

The potato chip flavor that needs to be
invented: No carb.
I'd give up my cell phone for a week if... I
had large enough pockets for my tablet.
My famous last words will be: Already? I was
just getting the hang of this.
When scientists from the future dig up a
cable system from 2012, they will conclude
that... It was the underlying infrastructure for the
information revolution, a brilliant feat of engineering
and a triumph of free market economics.
My trick for keeping my email inbox from
filling up? One touch-every email should be
responded to, filed or deleted immediately.
The one topping that should never be put
on a hot dog: Whipped cream.
My favorite restaurant: The Restaurant at the
End of the Universe.
The one thing I tell my kids about success in
life: Do as I say, not as I do.
Worst thing I've ever heard someone say in a
meeting: You just wasted an hour of my life, and I
will never get it back.
Bands I would actually go see live: N.Y.
Philharmonic
My favorite business and/or motivational
book: Drive by Daniel Pink
This incident from my youth taught me an
important lesson. What was the incident
and the lesson? I broke my leg because I was
skiing too slow to pop the binding. Ski faster.
My guilty television pleasure is: " 30 Rock. " I
can't believe it's the last season.

Dave Shull
Title: SVP, Programming, DISH Network
Dan York
Title: Chief Content Officer,
DirecTV (pictured)
Years in Cable: A couple
decades.
Education: Masters, B.S., Michigan State U.
Best Advice: Have fun or make fun.
Why Them? These formidable satellite
competitors keep cable on its toes. Former
AT&T video chief York manages all of DirecTV's
content activities, including strategy,
investments, acquisitions, development, and
original content. York also oversees DirecTVowned
Root Sports, comprising three
regional sports networks, and the Emmywinning
Audience Network. Savvy Shull has
been DISH's programming gatekeeper since
2004. While he spent much of his time in
Asia, overseeing operations overseas, he
came home in 2008 to carry out the mandate
of making this multichannel provider
the low-cost option.
