Ed Carroll
Title: COO, AMC
Networks
Number of Years in
Cable: 20 and holding.
Education: SUNY New Paltz
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less:
Show up, and wear a dark suit.
Why Him? Original programming
is top of mind for the alwaysenterprising
Carroll, who continues
to evolve the brands of AMC,
Sundance, IFC and WE tv under the
now publicly traded AMC Networks
umbrella. AMC started 2012 with
double-digit growth in net revenues
and ratings. Next year the network
will bid farewell to " Breaking Bad "
with the much-anticipated final
eight episodes. Look for more nonscripted
fare, including " Small Town
Security, " to debut on the network
alongside heavy-hitters " The Walk44.
THAT'S ME IN
THE SPOTLIGHT
Charlie Thurston

Title: SVP/GM Comcast Spotlight
ing Dead " and " Mad Men. " 2012
marked a banner year for IFC, which
delivered the largest audience in
its history with 13.5 million viewers
consuming the second season of
critically acclaimed hit " Portlandia. "
Sundance is primed for continued
success with an original programming
expansion including the launch
its first wholly owned scripted drama
" Rectify " and Jane Campion's
miniseries " Top of the Lake, " set to
premiere in 2013. WE tv, meanwhile,
Why Them? Comcast dubs these guys the
cable industry equivalent of the Dream Team,
working to advance and expand Comcast's
business with scalable advertising solutions
focused on three primary components:
targetability, interactivity and accountability.
Spotlight is an industry leader with the
launch of I+, a local market ad platform
interconnect linking cable, satellite and
telco homes in a market. It even features a
custom-build iPad and mobile app highlighting
all I+ has to offer. The future will be
about growing the sub base and continuing
to build the dual-screen business and adding
functionality to online. Spotlight's goal is to
become the central point of contact for ad

Michael Powell

Matt Polka

Favorite fictional character?
Ignatius J. Reilly
My famous last words will be: I
told you I was sick.
Why isn't TV Everywhere...
everywhere yet? Zombies
My guilty television pleasure is:
" Shark Tank "
sales opportunities for Fortune 500 companies
and local advertisers alike. Haase also
serves as treasurer of the Ronald A. Rehling
Memorial Fund, a not-for-profit organization
that supports leukemia research, and Thurston
is a big supporter of SkiTam.
Oster
My famous last words will be... " Every
subscriber has a value.... monetize! "
My favorite vacation spot: Deer Valley, Utah
Feingold
Early bird or night owl? Night owl
The one topping that should never be put
on a hot dog: Ketchup
University, Pittsburgh, PA, 1986
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less:
Success only comes before work in
the dictionary. (Thanks, Mom! You
were right!)
Why Them? These two cable
advocates don't always agree, but
they both serve vital roles for cable's
divergent interests. One example:
Retransmission consent reform.
Powell has steered clear of the
controversy as his biggest member
now just so happens to be a major
broadcaster. But Polka has grabbed
onto the issue for small- and mid-size
ops, who lack the leverage of larger
players. Powell's cable's leading
December 2012
advocate and representative. But
Polka just might be its conscience.
Both serve a vital function. And both
have been a huge success. Powell is
one of the most articulate and trusted
lobbyists in Washington-winning
praise from both sides of the aisle.
And Polka has earned his own kudos
for his grassroots efforts to connect
the entrepreneurs he represents with
the policymakers whose decisions
can have a major impact on their
communities and livelihoods. It's a
nice balance. And it's working like a
well-oiled lobbying machine.
Polka
When scientists from the future
dig up a cable system from
2012, they will conclude that...
Our unsung ACA members were as
good or better technically than any
other operator and really did create
the wave that brought broadband to
smaller markets and rural America.
