55. FOOD
AND FRIENDS
Brooke Johnson
Title: President,
Food Category,
Scripps Networks
Interactive
Best Advice in 7
Words or Less: Work hard;
give other people credit.
Laureen Ong
Title: President, Travel Channel
Number of Years in Cable: 20
Education: MA, Columbia
University; BA, Montclair State
Why Them? This presidential
pair has been a powerful
catalyst for attracting viewers
(and potentially buyers) over
to Scripps' lifestyle networks.
On the culinary side, Johnson
continues to reshape the food
genre, engaging viewers with
hands-on cooking programs
and leveraging the network's
influence to promote social
causes. Her efforts led Food
Network to a record Q1 this
year. Likewise, Ong drove Travel
Channel forward after coming
off the network's most successful
year ever. Her channel's
recent premiere of " Dangerous
Grounds, " following Todd
Carmichael in his quest for the
world's crème de la coffee,
seeks to expand the channel's
56. STARZ ALIGNING
Chris Albrecht
Title: CEO, Starz
Glenn Curtis
Title: President, Starz
Why Them? Curtis, who's been
a quiet force at Starz dating back
to the John Sie days, ably stepped
up this year to fill the role vacated
by Bill Myers, reporting to Albrecht.
He oversees daily operations at
the company, including the hefty
Starz Animation division. Under Albrecht's
watch, 2011-12 has been
marked by continued record revenues,
cashflow and subscriber totals for both
Starz (20.8 million and Encore (34.3 million). As
icing on the cake, they tossed their hat mightily
into the TV Everywhere ring with the launch of
the Starz Play & Encore Play services. And the
duo is only just revving the engine, with a strong
focus on originals. 2013 will see the fourth
and final installment of " Spartacus: War of the
Damned " and newcomers " Da Vinci's Demons "
and " The White Queen. " Michael Bay's " Black
Sails " is in development for 2014.

reach to foodies and coffee
carriers alike. Together, these
two media maestros continue
to bolster the Scripps brand
through innovative initiatives
and rich, original programming.
Johnson
The biggest innovation in
cable over the last year
has been... TV Everywhere
Early bird or night owl?

The song I sing most often

57. TURNER'S
BOTTOM LINE
Coleman Breland
Title: COO, Turner Network Sales
Greg D'Alba
Title: President CNN News Networks and
Turner Digital Sales
Donna Speciale
Title: President, Turner Entertainment and
Young Adults Ad Sales (pictured, below, right)
Why them? Turner's revenue team is proactively
pitching integrated ad deals that extend across
multiple screens. The squad hopes a more convergent
approach that taps all available channels will
become an enticing lure for potential ad partners.
CNN demonstrated the demand for this model by attracting
a bundle of sponsors to take part in its 2012
guarantee me a beach with
warm water and waves.
The one thing I'd do differently
if I could go back
to high school...Do my
homework.
My trick for keeping my
email inbox from filling
up? Delete, Delete, Delete
The one thing I tell my
kids about success in
life: Find something you like
to do and do it.
Ong
Early bird or night owl?
Definitely an early bird. I love
the promise of a new day and
all that is possible.
Favorite fictional character?
Mulan the Warrior Princess
My favorite restaurant:
Vedge in Philadelphia
My favorite business and/
or motivational book:
Confidence by Rosabeth Moss
Canter
My favorite vacation spot:
Sydney, Australia
My guilty television pleasure
is: " Game of Thrones " .
Election package. And while TV ratings have sagged,
CNN Digital grew 117% year-over-year, making
network success increasingly tied to cross-platform
collaboration. With D'Alba and Speciale signing
promotional deals and Breland concentrating on
development of a convergence model, the team is
poised to provide better ad options to its partners.
Breland
I'd give up my cell phone for a week if... I try,
but it keeps ringing, which is a good thing given
my kids have aspirations that may need funding.
Why Isn't TV Everywhere... everywhere yet?
New behaviors take time. The experience (what
viewers get, when and where) needs to be as consistent
as possible. Then it will be easier to market
the value of the experience and how it alters laws of
time and space.
Favorite fictional character: James Bond,
007. He has the best toys.
The one thing I would tell my kids about
success in life: Continually re-invent yourself
and have fun.
This incident from my youth taught me an
important lesson. What was the incident and
the lesson? I chewed up and swallowed a doubleedge
razor when I was about 16 months old. Yes,
seriously. I could just as easily not be here. So every
day is a pretty good day.
