INDEPENDENT TECHNOLOGY
EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR
Frank O. Miller
Chief Technical Offi cer, BendBroadband
In real estate, the three most important things are location,
location and location. That seems to apply to Frank Miller
and BendBroadband, too.
Our technology honoree last year, BendBroadband didn't
need any more tech advantages. But Mother Nature and the
digital revolution had other ideas.
Bend's central Oregon location just happens to be perfect
for locating highly effi cient, green data centers. The cool
night air of the desert, up about 4K feet, is key, says Miller,
a veteran of more than two decades of network engineering
at companies like Nike and Tektronix. Temperatures during
an average evening in this part of Oregon are in the 50s, allowing
BendBroadband to effi ciently cool its state-of-the-art
tier-3 data center known as The Vault.
Inside The Vault are servers from leading corporations in
health, telecom and banking. With power costs rising and
digital infrastructures growing, even large companies are
electing to forego the cost of building and running a data
center in favor of locating their infrastructure at venues like
The Vault. " We consider this a key opportunity for leadership, "
Miller says with the pride of an indie cable op with
36K subs but that also happens to house the guts of major
companies' computer operations.
" The most expensive parts of data centers are heat and
power, " he says. Legacy data centers, which might handle 1 or
2 KW/rack are insuffi cient for the needs of today's infrastructure-heavy
companies. The Vault can accommodate 10KW/
rack and the associated heat.
The temperate Oregon desert not
only is home to The Vault. It's literally
a cool neighborhood, with Facebook's
data center 13 miles from The
Vault and Google's nearby, too.
How does BendBroadband
use the mild night air to cool The
Vault? The answer is a Dutch-made
cooling system called KyotoCooling,
which uses 2.5-ton aluminum
wheels for heat transfer, with the

cool ambient air from outside replacing warm air inside
The Vault.
Beyond the rarified air of The Vault, BendBroadband's
residential cable customers have benefitted from Miller's
technological acumen, with the company topping area
competitors like Qwest, DirecTV and DISH in Internet
speed and video features. Yet Miller's just as proud of
what's ahead. As we went to press, BendBroadband
was getting ready to offer subs Arris' Media Gateway,
a platform integrating services to the home, including
broadcast and narrowcast video, VOD, DOCSIS 3.0
high-speed data, two lines of VOIP, Internet and media
sharing. The Gateway supports " the way you currently
deliver digital cable, but will also support the road to
IP delivery... we'll have years of innovation that we can
deploy on this infrastructure, " Miller says.
Another advantage that BendBroadband enjoys is the
smarts of the company's leader, Amy Tykeson. " She cares
about the customer experience and really understands the
complexity behind the curtain, " Miller
says. The feeling's mutual. " Frank's IT
experience, intelligence and energy
make him a quick study, and he's
accomplished so much, " Tykeson
says. " He's a collaborator and a
genuinely gracious person. We're
proud and lucky that he calls BendBroadband
home. " Agreed. ■
