TOUGH LEADERSHIP
Cable operators have never had it easy.
Indies do so much with limited resources, taking on much bigger satellite
companies and telcos using creative marketing, hyper-localism and just steely
grit. The fact that this year's Independent Show is in San Francisco-the hub
of tech innovation and entrepreneurship-seems quite appropriate. Major
MSOs, meanwhile, use their fi nancial resources and technological savvy to
take equally well-heeled competitors.
To be sure, all distributors are grappling with historic changes in consumer
behavior and the competitive landscape-all while trying to maintain billions
of dollars of plant that others use to go " over the top. " It's a tough business,
folks. But the operators recognized in these pages are part of the reason that
cable remains so strong. Cable operators have been doing this longer than
anyone else. And it shows.
In this issue, you'll read about how leadership on all fronts has propelled our
MSO of the Year Time Warner Cable to impressive growth. Wall Street has noticed,
pushing its stock price up 60% in 2010. You'll read about how Alaska's
GCI, our Independent Operator of the Year, has used smart operational prowess
and the hearty, can-do nature of its workforce to propel itself to a great
success. You'll learn about CommScope's efforts to help disaster victims, as
well as Mediacom's resiliency in the storm-ridden Gulf. And you'll marvel at
the commitment to community of ops ranging from Comcast to indies like
Knology and Click! Networks.
There's also plenty of history in these pages. You'll read about Michael
Willner's fateful decision to become an entrepreneur, Doug Fuller's moment
of truth at NPG and Frank Lloyd's role in helping to open the fl oodgates for

A fi nal note: As many of you know, Seth Arenstein, who expertly edited our
Top Ops issue for many years, has left CableFAX to join one of those ops in its
D.C. offi ce. I'll miss him. But now that I'm the one whose mug is on this page,
I can marvel from an even closer vantage point at the creativity, innovation and
sheer work ethic that makes cable ops so incredibly vibrant and successful.
