Cable's Campaign Trail
With 2016 a presidential election year, it seems everyone is focused on who
will be the next inhabitant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But for the operators
in this magazine, every day is election day. Churn is their exit poll. Direct
response rates are their ballot initiatives. Campaign stumps are the multitude
of community events they support. And yes, sometimes they may even kiss a
baby or two while chatting up their neighbors/customers in the produce aisle
of their local grocery stores.
Consumers are voting on where they want to spend their money, and there
is more choice than ever before-whether it's cable, satellite, telcos, or the
increasing number of OTT options. This unprecedented level of competition
makes our Top Ops selections even more special, which is why we'll recognize
all our honorees at our Sept. 22 awards breakfast. These are the companies and
individuals in the trenches, ensuring that cable doesn't go down like Charles
Pinckney. Charles who, you ask? Exactly. Thomas Jefferson took about 73 percent
of the votes cast in that 1804 race against Federalist Pinckney. Ouch.
Cable's job is made tougher in many respects by the actions of some of those
inside the Beltway. No doubt, whatever America decides at the polls on Nov.
8, there will be ramifications for the industry. So, what's a top operator to do?
Trying to read the Washington tea leaves is virtually impossible. Time's better
spent on what can be controlled.
There are some secret ingredients right here in this issue. Reinvesting in the
plant and offering new services, which is the playbook for MSO of the Year
Mediacom. Independent Operator of the Year Cincinnati Bell got creative with
a different sort of mobile app and more fl exible packaging. Cable One found a
way to leave a real mark on families in its communities, while Comcast is on the
cutting edge with its Stream offering.
Just as our democracy is founded on the will of the people, so are some of the
best business practices. Giving consumers more options and fl exibility sounds like
a campaign promise the industry should get behind!
