6. Home Automation/Security
It may be a nascent part of the business right
now, but home automation and security has
the potential to supercharge industry revenues
over the next several years as consumers
continue to embrace the " Internet of Things "
concept. And this isn't just a big moneymaker
for cable operators and telcos; programmers
could also fi nd themselves serving up content
to multiple in-home devices that interconnect
to each other and the larger Internet. Sure,
that's already happening today. But the future
of home automation could put the concept
into hyperdrive, with all the associated benefi ts
related to advertising, increased social media
engagement and tune-in... and beyond. As for
the technology vendors, the Internet-of-Things
future means an insatiable need for equipment
and software that helps CE makers, distributors,
programmers and app developers satisfy
consumers wants and needs. Add telemedicine
to the mix, and a new world opens up for
every segment of the industry.
5. Navigation
With Comcast's X1 platform leading the way, set-top
navigation has entered a new era that offers perhaps
the best chance for the current TV ecosystem to prosper
in what might otherwise become an OTT exodus.
For years, cable's clunky navigation got pilloried-and
deservedly so. But now major cable operators, telcos
and satellite ops are fi nally starting to catch up with
fancier and more personalized experiences offered by
OTT providers like Hulu, Netfl ix and YouTube, not to
mention third-party boxes like Roku and Playstation.
Meanwhile, both Cox and Charter have started revitalizing
the customer experience with highly personalized
navigation, even helping to integrate social media into
the mix. And other innovations are making it easier for
distributors to cost-effectively integrate OTT, VOD and
other IP-based content into the navigation experience.
In the end, the set-top is often the fi rst point of contact
for customers. And if the industry wants to retain
eyeballs, drive ad dollars and upsell new revenue-generating
services, it must keep navigation top of mind
for years to come.
