Contrary to early doom and gloom prognoses, the sky hasn't fallen on the
television business with the evolution of digital platforms and multiscreen
viewing. Today, the industry is in various stages of acceptance, with many
actually embracing the change and its effects on viewing patterns.
Rather than be tethered to traditional thinking and metrics, Evan Silverman,
SVP of digital media at A+E Networks, suggests distilling the content distribution
conversation to its most simple form. " The screen it's on is irrelevant.
The questions are, what are the delivery costs per piece of content and
what is the return on those costs? This notion that somehow digital viewing
is hurting the companies' bottom line is a misnomer, " he says.
Mobile and OTT accounted for 60 percent of AETN's digital video views in
January and, says Silverman, " we monetize those views, we do it at a signifi
cant CPM, and they are helping the company's bottom line. "
A+E Networks' biggest digital video success thus far is Lifetime's " Dance
Moms, " now in its fi fth season, according to Silverman. " We are seeing a
signifi cant percentage of the audience is consuming full episodes on mobile
and our OTT apps. But what's most interesting is, only about 10 percent of
the viewing is from season 5 episodes and 80 percent is seasons 1-4... the
remaining 10 percent is short-form, " he says.
