Battle of the
Network Screens...
As television braves major disruptions to its traditional business, predictable ROI has
fl own right out that content window. In fact, the TV industry hasn't faced disruption
this intense and earth-shaking since, well... cable evolved into a multichannel force
in the late 1970s. That was right around the time that the three broadcast nets were
assaulting us with " Battle of the Network Stars " and other requisite fare. It was time
for a change. Cable was that change. And now instead of " The Love Boat, " we have
" Fargo. " Not bad, don't cha-know?
Swap out the cable cowboys for the Silicon Valley rebels, and 1979 becomes 2016.
Consumers want more fl exibility and choice-and better content to boot. If they
don't like you, they'll go to Netfl ix, Amazon or even Sling TV. They've never had more
options to ditch the big bundle.
For these reasons, Cablefax is introducing Screenster. Think of it as our mission to tackle
head on the multiscreen future that has already completely turned the old traditional cable
business on its head-and that will only continue to challenge conventional business
models. But now that TV networks and distributors are fi rmly embracing the future rather
than resisting it, it seems like the perfect time for Cablefax to step up its coverage of the
intersection between old and new, traditional and disruptive, cowboys and rebels.
Our fi rst Screenster-branded feature in Cablefax: The Magazine debuts in this issue on page
20, and I hope you enjoy our rundown of the recent OTT launches our editors feel could
go the distance. We may not have a crystal ball, but we live and breathe this stuff. And
with Screenster, we plan to take our coverage to an entirely new level as we highlight the
major players, strategies, challenges and opportunities facing this industry as it morphs into
something even more powerful (and perhaps profi table) than it ever imagined.
We look forward to joining you and your colleagues on this journey as TV transforms.
And while re-runs of " The Love Boat " might still only be available via the DVD box set,
don't worry: We're sure they will be streaming soon enough.
