and problem-solving. Their location doesn't preclude
them from being involved in many aspects of the cable
world either such as serving on boards of ACA, NCTA,
CTIA, and many others. Additionally, Duncan does
double-duty as one of the company's pilots. Chapados
served for many years with Sen. Ted Stevens. Pidgeon
has distinguished herself as one of the leading female
executives in cable.
27. ALL SEWN UP
Jeffrey Ross
Title: President,
Armstrong Utilities
Years in Cable: 21
Education: Clark University;
MBA, Northeastern University; BS,
Electrical Engineering Tech,
Penn State University; AS, Electrical
Engineering Tech
Ross brings a blend of passion, experience, intelligence
and integrity to his work. His goals last year-which
were met-were to initiate and complete Armstrong's
" All Digital " initiative, which eliminates analog distribution
and provides customers with digital set tops (DTAs). Also
accomplished was launching programming guides on both
HD and SD devices in the most customer-friendly way
possible. What's next for Ross? Completing a swap out of
all D2 modems with D3 in 2015.
28. 30 BLOCK
Allan Block
Title: Chairman, Buckeye
Cablevision &
Block Communications
Years in Cable: 30
Education: University of
Pennsylvania
Best Advice in 7 Words
or Less: Take care of the
customer first.
Block brings three decades of experience to his position,
which has helped successfully lead the only independent
cable company that's serving a metropolitan area to great
heights. He's established the " cloud " of tomorrow for residents
of northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Two qualities
that best describe Block are intelligence and tenacity. If
he sees a problem with an issue, then he and his colleagues
do not rest until it is solved to their customers' needs.
I watch most programming on this device:
Flat screen TV
Should the industry embrace or reject " virtual
MSOs " and why? If the rate of programming price
increases doesn't slow, all TV is going to be delivered
over the top in which case virtual MSOs would become a
possibility.
If I had a show on YouTube it would be called...
" Hello Suckers "
Favorite screen: Regular TV flat screen
Apple iWatch or Rolex? Rolex
I wish Congress would just... repeal the retransmission
Cablefax: The Magazine
consent law to promote the interests of average cable
subscribers at home.
If my office produced a viral video, the background
music would be... Prussian Military March
My " Real Housewives " catch-phrase is...
Nothing is real about the Real Housewives.
Favorite Cable Show memory: Tom Wheeler, president
of the NCTA, at the 1983 convention (my first) giving a
rousing speech in favor of cable legislation that finally
passed Congress a year later as the Cable Act.
Favorite vacation spot:
Positano, Italy, on the Amalfi Coast
Favorite TV show as a kid: " Hogan's Heroes "
Dish I can make and that would impress a celebrity
chef: Nothing
29. THE BIG MAC
Earle A. MacKenzie
Title: EVP & COO,
Shentel
Years in Cable: 40
Education: BBA,
Accounting, The College
of William & Mary
Best Advice in 7
Words or Less: Luck is
where preparation meets
opportunity.
The year 2014 was a big one for MacKenzie and
Shentel. The company announced that net postpaid
subscriber additions for the fiscal year were 14,146, an
increase of 30.6 percent from the previous year. Large
credit goes to MacKenzie, who is responsible for Shentel's
daily operations of its subsidiaries. While some say
he's on the quiet side, most would agree that when he
speaks-everybody listens.
I watch most programming on this device: TV
The biggest innovation in cable over the last year:
The evolution of cloud-based vendors that can take the
linear feed from a cable operator and provide a robust
search and discovery experience for the user. We now
need the digital rights to be able to deliver a robust line up
outside the home.
Should the industry embrace or reject " virtual MSOs "
and why? Embrace. With shrinking video margins, cable
operators need to position ourselves as the preferred
broadband provider and allow the customer to get programming
from all sources. With the growing demand for data, in
particular video, the customer will migrate to faster speeds
and higher data packages with better operating margins.
I wish Congress would just... take control of making
telecom and media policy back from the FCC and
rewrite the 1992 Cable Act and the 1996 Telecom Act
to reflect the realities of today's marketplace and to
provide safeguards to assure a level playing field for
smaller operators.
My favorite business/motivational book: Marketing
Warfare by Al Ries and Jack Trout, originally
published in 1997 and updated in 2007. This book
has influenced my marketing and sales strategies for
the past 25 years.
May 2015
30. THE BEAT(Y) GOES ON
Bill Beaty
Title: EVP, Cable TV and Affiliate Relations, Comporium
Years in Cable: 41 years
Education: BA History, Presbyterian College
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: Keep learning and
never look back.
Beaty has led Comporium to winning numerous awards
from Cablefax, most recently the prestigious Operator of
the Year just this last July. Described as a " true southern
gentleman, " he always maintains his cool even during
heated negotiations and is able to navigate the waters as
a telco in the video business with few ripples. Communications
runs in the family as his father founded the first
ever radio station in Rock Hill, S.C.: WRHL.
If I had a show on YouTube it would be called...
" The Day-to-Day Lives of Bill's Grandchildren "
I wish Congress would just... update antiquated communication
law.
Favorite Cable Show memory: Discussing the soon-tolaunch
Golf Channel with Arnold Palmer
Favorite vacation spot: Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.
My favorite business/motivational book: Good to
Great by Jim Collins
31. BOYCOM MEETS WORLD
Patricia Jo Boyers
Title: President & Vice-Chair,
Boycom Communications
Years in Cable: 36 years
Education: Three Rivers Community
College and University
of Missouri-Columbia
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: Trust everyone, but
brand your cattle!
Boyers is a homespun leader who knows how to get
things done. When something is wrong she will let you
know, and when something is right she'll communicate
that too. We think that's the sign of a great leader. Boyers
has testified before the US Senate on the State of Rural
Broadband and, in July, she was elected as Vice Chair to
the American Cable Association for a two-year term.
I wish Congress would just... convene only once every
five years, the other four the voting public would be safe.
The technology that will most benefit cable over the
next year is: High Speed Broadband, of course!
Favorite TV show as a kid: " Gunsmoke "
Dish I can make and that would impress a celebrity
chef: My momma's chicken and dumplings.
My favorite business/motivational book: EntreLeadership
by Dave Ramsey
