More of the Most Powerful Women in Cable 2011
creation " True Dads, " a campaign urging men to
take an active role in their children's lives.
Kathy Payne
VP, Content Acquisition, Cox
Communications
Payne is responsible for
contract negotiations and
compliance for hundreds of
cable networks under Cox,
including notables like Fox, MTV, Comcast and
A&E. She also helps deploy VOD, high-def and
mobile TV services. Keeping up with the pace of
technology is an uphill battle. " Our negotiations
with video content owners are constantly evolving
to address changes in video content delivery, "
she says. Another hill to climb: " Addressing
the rising cost and expansion of sports content
on so many different channels and platforms. "
Maria Perez-Brown
SVP, Programming &
Development, nuvoTV
Perez-Brown recently
oversaw the production of
nuvoTV's original series additions
and negotiated program
acquisitions deals with top studios. An adjunct
professor at Columbia U and recipient of the
Annual Achievement in Television Award from the
National Hispanic Academy of Media Arts and
Sciences, Perez-Brown is much-lauded within
cable. She's most proud of " creating shows for
television that have influenced a generation of
young people, through providing positive images
of Latinos and African Americans and opening
doors for many professionals of color. "
Michelle Rice
EVP, Affiliate Sales & Marketing,
TV One
TV One has had a whirlwind
couple of years, and Rice
has had a large hand in its
successes. When TV One hit
50 million households in 2011, she says, " that
was the icing on the cake. TV One launching
on Cablevision this year is the cherry on
top! " Known for getting things done, Rice is an
informed negotiator whose tenacity and integrity
continue to build on the network's distribution in
a tough climate. And who knew cooking was a
favorite pastime of Rice's? " As long as there's the
promise of a good glass of wine, " she says.
Jennifer Robertson
SVP, Digital Media & Business
Development, WE tv
As the lead on overall
brand extension for WE tv,
Robertson oversees both the
36
cablefaxmag.com
content creation and technical direction for the
network's expanding group of digital properties
including WEtv.com and GuySpeak.com. After
transitioning a few years ago from marketing
to overseeing WE's digital and social media
endeavors, Robertson says, " I'm thrilled to be
able to combine my marketing experience with
the exciting world of digital communications. "
Jessica Rodriguez
SVP, Univision Cable Networks,
Univision Communications
A driving force behind Univision
Cable Networks, Rodriguez
oversees an expanding
portfolio and is closely
involved with the launch of new nets. Perhaps
because this Bronx girl grew up watching Univision,
she shares a particular connection. Since
she took over cable operations, Galavision
delivered its best-ever summer ratings this year.
" I'm extremely excited about working on a content
strategy that will continue to give Hispanics
more of the content they love, and delivering it
to them in a way they want it, " she says.
Kim Rosenblum
EVP, Marketing and Creative,
TV Land
The past year saw
Rosenbum spearheading
three highly successful ad
campaigns that launched
three new shows: " Hot in Cleveland, " " Happily
Divorced " and " Retired at 35. " She positioned
the series, developed the key art and launched
creative and on-air promotions. The success of
the campaigns and shows have cemented TV
Land's reinvention as a home not only for modern
classics, but fresh original programming as
well. " Being a marketer today is like being a kid
in a candy store, " she says.
D'Arcy Rudnay
SVP, Corporate Communications,
Comcast Corp.
The lead spokesperson for
Comcast, Rudnay heads
up strategic communications
and works directly
with CEO Brian Roberts, senior management
and investors to ensure proper reputation
management. It's no small task for an organization
with more than 100,000 employees.
She names as her greatest accomplishment
her family and two daughters-a kindergarten
teacher and a sports agent at CAA. " With life
as hectic as it is with work and grown children
no longer living at home, we savor the time
we have together by taking fun trips and
traveling together. "
November 2011
Ellen Schned
SVP, Distribution, Ovation
Schned has helped Ovation
rake in more than 3 million
subs since the start of 2011
and recently renewed a deal
with Verizon and secured
the launch of Ovation and Ovation HD in the
Comcast Washington D.C. market. When not
wheeling and dealing for the indie net, Schned
is enjoying golf and movies. " Both let you check
out for a few hours... laugh at the movie and cry
at my golf shots, or vice versa, " she quips.
Lisa Schwartz
EVP, Distribution, Operations
& Business Development,
Sundance Selects/IFC Films
Confident strategist Schwartz
secures revenue-generating
opportunities, for both domestic
and international distribution, across platforms.
She pioneered the day-and-date DVD/
VOD model, with " Peep World " and " Cracks " as
the first titles, to be followed by Sundance Channel
hit " Carlos. " Schwartz is most proud of how
Sundance has pioneered " the way independent
film is distributed and then to grow that model
into three distinct day and date brands: IFC
Films, IFC Midnight and Sundance Selects. " Her
favorite pastime? " Watching movies of course!
And also planning family vacations. "
Rebecca Schulte
SVP/GM, Comcast SportsNet
Mid-Atlantic
With Schulte at the top,
Comcast SportsNet MidAtlantic
has launched CSNbaltimore.com,
enhanced
mobile and social media efforts, brought the net
to full HD production and seen a sizeable studio
upgrade. She also has a hand in developing
key partnerships with various sports teams. But
there's no resting on laurels in this competitive
game. " I am very confident in our programming
and websites, but you can't just rely on good
product to attract viewers these days; it takes a
lot of creativity and hard work to reach people. "
Lisa Sherman
EVP/GM, Logo, MTV Networks
Since Logo's launch in 2005,
Sherman has seen the
network increase distribution
by 135%, increase total day
ratings by 129% in the last
two years and cement partnerships with celebs
like Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler. The
LGBT-oriented net, now Nielsen-rated, is on a
big roll. Sherman's community efforts include
