More of the Most Powerful Women in Cable 2012
Dr. Libby
Haight O'Connell
Chief Historian/SVP,
Corporate Outreach
A&E Networks/AETN
In addition to serving as
an advisor to History's
programming department, O'Connell produces
educational and community-based initiatives for
AETN, such as the Take A Veteran to School program
on History, in which students invite veterans to
share their stories of service. So how did A&E
Network's chief historian get her start? She applied
for a short consulting position at a new network in
1993, thinking it would be fun to try something new.
" Fast forward to today. Cable is at the forefront of
innovation offering new and exciting challenges and
opportunities that keep me on my toes every day, "
she says. " There is never a dull moment, and I am
thrilled to be a part of it. "
Becky Henderson
Founder/GM
Halogen TV Network
A cable GM at the young
age of 33? That's an
accomplishment. Halogen,
a socially-conscious net
aimed at Millennials, is on the rise-and execs at
the Inspiration Nets family are looking to bill it as
an authority on the demo. " I've always believed that
stories shape our lives, and cable is a great platform
to tell stories, " she says. " I still believe that today
and am excited to empower our viewers to be the
change they wish to see in the world. " But staying
focused even on her busiest days requires a little
help-from her husband, first and foremost. " Without
his support I'd be lost, " she says.
Cathy Hetzel
Corporate President/
President of the
Advanced Media and
Information Division
Rentrak Corp.
Since joining Rentrak in 2004, Hetzel has worked to
expand media measurement and analytics across the
industry. She was key in launching the company's VOD
business and has boosted its STB TV measurement
division and OTT solutions. A 29-year cable and media
industry vet, she advises the following as a mid-day
re-energizer: " Step away from the computer and
'manage by walking around.' It always amazes me
what I can learn from taking a walk around the office
and talking to team members in action. "

Dale Hopkins
EVP, Distribution, GSN
A savvy dealmaker,
Hopkins wields her
experience from both
the programming and
operations sides of cable
to get results. In her previous post as EVP/CMO
for GSN she reshaped the brand, driving the net's
highest ratings in company history. Today she works
with the top decision-makers at the major cable and
satellite companies. The mantra that best helps her
multitask? She heeds the words of Jakob Dylan:
" Eyes on the prize, reboot the mission, I lost my
sight, but not the vision. " And her favorite mid-day
energizer is not a stimulant, per se. Her secret? " A
stimulating lunch partner. "
Annie Howell
EVP, Corporate
Communications and
Program Publicity
Crown Media Family
Networks
We named her PR Person of the Year during her
14-year tenure at Discovery. Now at Crown Media,
Howell leads a bi-coastal team, Crown Media
Holdings' investor relations and every aspect of
communications for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark
Movie Channel. Then there's the new programming
daytime programming block (which has opened
strong) and the net's first scripted series to come.
Howell is superb at building relationships, in an
industry where it truly matters. We hear she's pretty
darn organized, too. Her husband jokes that she
suffers from an acute case of H.E.D. That is, Hyper
Efficiency Disorder. " I rely on wall calendars, alarms,
my blackberry (no, I do NOT want an iPhone), my
assistant and a steady stream of coffee or green tea
to keep me on track during the day, " she says.
Tana Jamieson
SVP, Drama
Programming
A&E Television
Network
Jamieson heads up A&E's
scripted dramatic programming out of Los Angeles.
She's been behind network hits like " The Glades "
and most recently the series " Longmire, " the net's
No. 1 original drama series of all time among total
viewers and adults 25-54. Cable is a great place
for professional women to thrive, she says. " As this
CableFAX forum aptly demonstrates, cable is chockfull
of women in variety of prominent positions. I
November 2012
certainly don't get any sense of any 'old boys
network' in cable. "
Liz Janneman
EVP, Advertising
Sales, Ovation
With Janneman as head
of ad sales, Ovation
has grown its annual
revenue by 40%, and upfront revenue has tripled.
Having reached 51 million households this year, the
net continues to build partnerships with national
advertisers, thanks to Janneman's leadership. She
began her career as buyer of local cable in '83, and
then moved on to national cable buying. Getting
in on the ground floor might very well explain her
success. Advice she's used to this day from Joe
Uva, ex-Univision CEO: " He once told me never to be
intimidated by anyone I meet regardless of their title.
Just think of them in their PJ's. They're just people! "
Loretha Jones
President, Original
Programming
BET Networks
Jones' responsibilities
include oversight of
original programming, news, development and
acquisitions, including series like " Let's Stay
Together, " " The Game " and " Sunday Best. " She
also brokered the deal to bring " The Game " to BET,
where it premiered on the network to a record 7.7
million viewers. Her team developed the new season
and landed the original actors as well. But Jones
isn't stopping there. BET Networks recently unveiled
an impressive development slate, featuring more
originals, which it intends to develop as branddefining
programming.
Toni Judkins
EVP, Original
Programming and
Production
TV One
After joining TV One
five years ago, Judkins
ascended to the top post in programming in less
than a year. This year, the net doubled its original
programming, most of which will debut at the end
of 2012. That's a whole lot more to oversee-but
we're confident Judkins will kill it. An honoree at
the 2012 NAMIC Emerging Leaders breakfast, a
Multi Woman to Watch and deemed a role model by
ESSENCE magazine, Toni will undoubtedly rise to
the occasion.
