More of the Most Powerful Women in Cable 2012
Mary Murano
EVP, Distribution
Current TV
Murano recently joined
team Current as head of
distribution where she's
building distribution and
partnerships, and will play a key role as the network
builds its brand as the new news network and
particularly in this critical election year. A dedicated
mentor, Murano is a past member of WICT's national
board and a senior adviser to its New York chapter,
where she was recognized as the " Advisor of the
Year " in 2010.
Vikki Neil
SVP/GM,
Online Brands
Scripps Networks
Interactive
Tough negotiator Neil
executes planning and competitive mapping
for Scripps' digital strategy, driving audience
development and engagement metrics. Her forays
into experiential marketing are evidenced by HGTV's
sizable presence at South By Southwest earlier this
year. Best advice for a quick midday re-energizer?
" I usually grab lunch with someone at work, but we
talk about something other than work most of the
time, " she says. " I've worked with many of these
people for years, so it's a chance to have a laugh, get
advice and keep it all in perspective. "
Susane Newell
VP of Programming
NCTC
Newell tends to stand
more behind the curtain
than at center stage-
and that's the way she likes it. She negotiates
carriage affiliation agreements on behalf of nearly
1K participating members serving 23 million NCTC
subscribers-not a job for the faint of heart. She
signed Comcast-NBCU at the Independent Show in
San Francisco. " Women need to remember that our
career is our canvas and as the artist, it is in own
creative control to make it a masterpiece, " she says.
Suzanne Norman
SVP, Strategy and
Business Operations,
CMT, MTV Networks
As the highest-ranking
female executive at
CMT, Norman oversees the network's day-to-day
38
cablefaxmag.com
operations and is charged with identifying new
growth strategies and revenue streams. Her
guidance and careful procurement of resources
enabled CMT to double the number of original
programs in production, and deliver the two highestrated
series in its history with the launches of " My
Big Redneck Vacation' and " Bayou Billionaires " in
January 2012. " Opportunities for women in this
industry are endless, regardless of your area of
interest, " she says.
Jane Olson
SVP, Marketing &
Brand Strategy
Oxygen Media
A creative force, Olson
is credited with growing
Oxygen into a top young women's network with
a brand built just for them-diverse, social and
technologically savvy. Over the past year, Olson
helped Oxygen become a top 20 network for women
18-34, as well as the No. 1 network for women
18-34 on Mon nights. When she's not overseeing
Oxygen's consumer marketing, trade marketing,
licensing and partnerships, brand development,
creative services and on-air promotions, Olson
speaks on numerous industry panels. " The good
news for young women is that their opportunities are
the same as their male counterparts, " she says.
Lisa Choi Owens
SVP/GM, Digital
Media
Scripps Networks
Interactive
Owens' innovative work
setting the digital strategy for Scripps has reaped
tremendous rewards for the company's categoryleading
Websites and emerging media platforms. Her
role in identifying and growing opportunities across
multiple digital platforms for Scripps' lifestyle media
platforms has been instrumental in the creation of
new revenue streams for the company. The tool that
helps her best juggle busy days? Evernote.
Kathy Payne
VP, Content
Acquisition
Cox Communications
The current chair of
WICT's national board,
Payne started out as a communications lawyer, then
moved over to the business side in Cox's content
acquisition group 12 years ago. " I think the thing
that keeps me the most excited about our industry
November 2012
is the incredible pace of change, " she says. " There
is always a new technology or new competitor that
is reshaping our industry. It is an exciting challenge
to negotiate content deals so that we are embracing
the realities of today as well as the changes the
future will bring. "
Maria
Perez-Brown
SVP, Programming &
Development
nuvoTV
Perez-Brown this year
has overseen development of the most ambitious
slate of original programming in nuvoTV's eightyear
history, including original series " Operation:
Osmin, " " PastPort " and " Model Latina. " She also
led the partnership with NBC's Peacock Productions
to produce the town hall special " We Decide:
Latinos and the 2012 Election. " What does she
love about cable? " The quality of story telling and
the opportunity for alternative voices to create
compelling programming, " she says.
Debi Picciolo
Regional VP of
Operations,
West Region
Time Warner Cable
As a member of the
National Charity League, Picciolo is an inspiring
advocate for community philanthropic efforts and
actively encourages others to participate. What
do young women looking to break into cable need
to know about their opportunities? " Anything is
possible; take ownership of your career, identify
what you want, ensure that you are networking, and
make clear what you want from those who can help
you achieve your goals, " she says.
Brenda Piper
CMO
Turner
Broadcasting's
Animation, Young
Adults & Kids Media
Group
Throughout her career, Piper has been an advocate
for educating and empowering girls to better realize
their potential for careers within the workforce. She
currently sits on the Girl Scouts' National Board of
Directors. She is on the Advisory Board for Usher's
New Look Foundation, which certifies young people
in four leadership pillars-talent, education, career
and service-to ensure their success as leaders
