Tia Lee
Regional Data Engineer
Suddenlink
In an early temp job she took
while still in school, Lee says
she " cleaned remotes and
reset addressable boxes. " But then a new supervisor
urged her to apply for an engineering job. The rest, as
they say, is history. In 2001, Lee joined Charter and now
oversees Suddenlink's fiber network in the Atlantic region.
About that early supervisor, Lee says, " He's taught me
during my career to overcome my insecurities and believe
in myself... I am grateful for that lesson and his help. "
Rebecca Rusk Lim
VP, Interactive
Experience, Turner
Broadcasting System
Lim may be new to Turner,
but her 25 years in the media
industry makes her a veteran. Today, she's in charge of
interactive strategy for Turner. She's also active in the
CTAM Advanced Cable Solutions Consortium, the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences Interactive Media Peer
Group, and CableLabs Programmer Initiatives. " My mother
is my most influential mentor, " she says. " She succeeded
in a traditionally male role before it was fashionable. She
still gives me advice that I try to pass on to my daughters. "
Selina Lo
CEO, Ruckus Wireless
Get this: Since starting Ruckus
Wireless in 2004, Lo has
grown the company by more
than 1,100%. And in the last
year alone, Ruckus YOY revenues have doubled. Under
Lo's leadership, Ruckus now counts itself as a top-three
provider in mobile offload solutions for cable operators,
and includes Time Warner Cable as a major customer.
Lo, meanwhile, believes other women should be able to
achieve success in the same way she has. She advises
women to recognize the value that they contribute, while
always looking for ways to add more.
Rhonda Lowry
VP, Emerging Social
Web Technologies
Turner Broadcasting
System
Although Lowry began
her career in the aerospace industry, today she's
more of a rocket scientist in the metaphorical sense.
Highly intellectual, technology-focused, and a social
media star, Lowry's work in the cable industry rises
to stratospheric heights. Most recently at Turner, she
44
Top Women in Technology
has focused on social media apps, gaming, content
discovery and social analytics. Her grandfather
remains her most influential mentor: " His best advice
was about getting from talk to action as quickly as
possible, summed up as: 'Spit in one hand, and hope in
the other. See which fills up faster'. "
Tara Maitra
SVP/GM, Content
Services and Ad Sales
TiVo
Maitra has a motto: Don't
procrastinate on the easy
stuff. " While it may seem better to focus on top priorities
and address the small matters later, I find taking action
on the issues I can address quickly to be very helpful. " If
that's the secret to Maitra's success, then it's good advice.
She leads TiVo's interactive advertising and audience
measurement businesses, and she has been instrumental
in helping TiVo create a unified television experience-one
integrated user interface, one remote, and one way to
search for any content on TV.
Christy Martin
VP, Solutions
Engineering, iBox
Martin has helped lead iBox
Systems since founding
the company in 2004. With
customers including Comcast, DirecTV, Rovi and Samsung,
Martin's hands have been full developing product
strategies, conducting research and leading integration
projects. " I have always loved that cable products integrate
technology and business solutions across networking,
content management, information systems, and consumer
applications, " she says. " Having survived the early years
of interactive media, it is great fun to see those concepts
take on a new life. "
Vicki Marts
Director, Video
Engineering
Cox Communications
With more than 30 years at
Cox under her belt, Marts has
tried a little of everything, rising from service technician
all the way up to digital services supervisor. Then in 2000,
Marts was promoted to Master Telecommunications
Center manager, in charge of all the headend, hub sites
and optical transport nodes across Kansas. She has served
as Region 5 director on the SCTE board of directors, where
she also acted as Western vice chair. How does she stay
grounded? " Crazy days happen no matter what industry
you're in and just like scuba diving, remember to keep
breathing, " she says.
}
Susan McLaughlin
VP, Strategic Sales
TOA Technologies
When McLaughlin joined
TOA Technologies, it was a
start-up company looking to
solve cable's workforce management problems. Today,
TOA is the industry leader in mobile workforce technology,
and McLaughlin plays a critical role in furthering the
company's vision, advancing product development and
strengthening relationships with the top pay-TV providers.
" My experience in cable has been that if you are selfmotivated,
and can prove that you are genuinely interested
in being in cable, you will be successful, " she says.
Jill Meinzer
VP/GM, Technical
Services, Arris
Meinzer oversees product
technical support teams at
Arris, as well as customer
training and the company's technical publications. Her
projects over the last year have included development
and implementation of an advanced customer Web portal,
more customer communications forums, new Web-based
training materials, and new global support programs as
Arris expands with new products, and into new markets.
Stephanie Mitchko
SVP, Interactive
Platform Development
Technology
Cablevision Systems
Mitchko didn't set out to join
the cable industry, but once she did, it didn't take long to
get her hooked. Today, Mitchko is in charge of software
infrastructure development at Cablevision, and her focus is
on converged consumer media experiences. While Mitchko
is always searching for new mentors, she says her dad
has been " a very strong influence in my life and career.
He taught me be diligent, stay focused and that there is
nothing I cannot achieve. "
Emily M. Nikoo
EVP, Blonder Tongue
Laboratories
After nearly two decades in
the cable industry, Nikoo has
more than enough insight
and expertise to share. Among other projects at Blonder
Tongue, she has spearheaded the Business Technical
Group charged with brainstorming and developing
products in the cable commercial services sector. And
Nikoo has a trick for managing the daily workload: " I
look at my day, stay focused, stay flexible, do one thing
