NOTE TO SELF
To be honest, I thought I'd be writing this editor's letter about how
America had elected its fi rst female president. Some would have been
unhappy with who it was, while some would have been jubilant. Many
are feeling uncertain. But putting politics aside, it remains a fact that no
woman has broken through the White House glass ceiling. Yet.
When my daughter asked me on Nov. 9 if a woman will ever become
president, I answered yes without hesitation. With so many amazing,
intelligent women, it is a given. Just look at the Most Powerful Women in
Cable. You have women in these pages who have made it their mission
to lift others up. Women who are pioneering technological innovation.
Women who are shrewd negotiators. Women who are speaking up in
boardrooms. Who knows... maybe one of the Most Powerful Women in
Cable will someday be elected to the most powerful offi ce in the land.
At this year's WICT DC/Baltimore chapter's Powerbrokers Breakfast,
honoree and Comcast Beltway Region SVP Mary McLaughlin gave a
moving speech that she said her teenage daughter helped her write. It's
something she's always done-solicit feedback from both her children.
" It builds confi dence, " she told the crowd. What great advice. I made a
note to myself not only to do this with my own children, but to look for
others who could benefi t from that confi dence boost. And it's a win-win
because it will only improve what I'm working on. That kind of thinking is
one of the things that separates the powerful from the merely signifi cant.
One of the questions we asked this year's Most Powerful Women
honorees is what advice would they give their 13-year-old selves. I
sure have a lot of wisdom I'd like to impart on my younger self.
Don't get that perm.
He's just not that into you.
Start fl ossing now.
But the main advice I'd share with her is believe in yourself.
That's certainly hard in middle school, but it doesn't
necessarily get easier in your twenties, thirties, forties
and beyond. It occurred to me that this year's Most
Powerful Women in Cable are trailblazers who have
learned to silence that voice of self-doubt and be
fearless. Whether they're one of the few women in the
boardroom or the only one calling for a project to zig
instead of zag, they've found their voices and are roaring
their way to the top.
