Most Powerful Women in Cable 2016: The Top 50
14. Tonia O'Connor
she has stewarded global brands including Animal Planet,
Science Channel and Velocity, and most recently led the
international production and development team. She has
worked with production companies to adapt Discovery's
series across global channels and across all platforms-including
linear, OTT and free-to-air. She's made a lasting
footprint at Discovery and throughout the content industry
as a whole.
12. Catherine Bohigian
EVP, Government Affairs
Charter Communications
A year and a half ago, Charter announced
its nearly $90 billion-dollar
transactions with Time Warner Cable
and Bright House Networks. Since
that time, Bohigian has overseen
and orchestrated a review process
that included obtaining the necessary approvals from the
FCC, the U.S. Department of Justice, multiple states and
more than 600 local franchises. She tirelessly led her team,
coordinated various third-party supporters, continually communicated
the benefits of these transactions and successfully
obtained all approvals. The transactions closed in May 2016
making Charter the second-largest cable company in the
U.S. Bohigian hasn't let her busy schedule prevent her from
helping senior women across Charter raise their profiles in
the industry, in the media and within the company through
press interviews and speaking opportunities. She also currently
serves as a director-at-large on the WICT board.
13. Linda Yaccarino
Chairman, Advertising Sales & Client
Partnerships
NBCUniversal
With Yaccarino at the helm, NBCU's
2016 upfront was the most successful
since the merger with Comcast.
The numbers hit a cool $6 billion.
Her strategy resulted in gains across
broadcast, cable and digital sales. Moreover, she's spearheaded
NBCU's transition into a tech-driven content company
by introducing a suite of cutting-edge data, analytics
and consumer targeting tools, including its Audience Studio,
the Audience Targeting Platform, the NBCUx programmatic
offering and NBCU+ Powered by Comcast, a data-driven
program for clients. Other content partnerships under her
direction include AOL and Snapchat, as well as investments
in digital trailblazers BuzzFeed and Vox Media. In the coming
year, she'll continue to experiment with ad models that
are data informed, such as a reduction of national ad load
for " Saturday Night Live " by 30 percent this fall.
Chief Commercial Officer & President of
Content Distribution
Univision Communications Inc.
Assuming dual roles at Univision may
have caused O'Connor to delegate
some of her previous duties-but
whatever she's doing is working. The
launch late last year of new streaming
service UnivisionNow, which spans both Univision and UniMás,
has given the company a more direct link to its consumers
that provides insights on viewing habits that aren't available
via traditional distribution channels. " Social media services are
resembling the next wave of cable channel lineups with billions
of video views per day, " O'Connor says. " We must embrace
these platforms... and bridge the gap between new and traditional
experiences. " To that end, she's already looking for ways
to lure even more people to its digital portfolio, which already
has nearly 100 million unique users.
15. Nomi Bergman
President
Advance/Newhouse Partnership
During a year of great change, Bergman
continues to shine. The former
Bright House president stands among
the most influential leaders in the
industry, having helped steer it through
numerous evolutions. A testament
to her influence, she recently was named to the board of two
forward-looking technology companies: Visteon, a manufacturer
of cockpit electronics and connected car products, and
Mediamorph, a cloud-based rights management system for
programmers and distributors. No surprise, when asked the
biggest recent story in cable Bergman says, " Certainly, the
consolidation, which affected several MSOs, including Bright
House, is an indicator of how our industry is evolving, facing
national competitors with great resources, on both the content
& distribution sides of our business. "
16. Louise Sams
EVP & General Counsel
Turner Broadcasting
Sams oversees a team of lawyers
around the globe as they oversee
legal matters including acquisitions,
production and clearance of content
for Turner's entertainment and
animation networks. She also protects
the company's intellectual property and handles litigation and
employment matters. She cites the FCC's proposal on set-top
boxes as the year's biggest cable story. " That certainly reinforces
to everyone the need for innovation and keeping pace with
technology changes and evolving consumer habits, " she says.
And Sams looks no further than TBS' own " Full Frontal With
