Most Powerful Women 2017: The Top 50
19. Lynn Charytan
SVP & Senior Deputy General Counsel
Comcast Corporation
EVP & General Counsel
Comcast Cable
Charytan juggles multiple tasks at
Comcast and Comcast Cable with
considerably more intellect and
aplomb than her favorite female TV character, Selina Meyer of
" Veep. " She oversees the full range of legal affairs of Comcast
Cable and, on the corporate side, also manages all regulatory
compliance with the NBCUniversal transaction requirements.
A passionate advocate for equality in the legal and cable fields,
Charytan believes promoting from within can aid in leveling the
field. " There are so many great women waiting for their moment
in the sun-give them a chance, take a chance on them,
and then support them, " she says.
20. Christine Driessen
EVP & CFO
ESPN
In addition to overseeing the company's
worldwide financial operations,
Driessen's trusted financial advice
plays a vital role in strategic planning
for all of ESPN's acquisitions, new
business ventures and programming initiatives. Known for her
business acumen, Driessen also is heavily involved in multimedia
programming rights deals, digital strategy and distribution
agreements. Because she works at ESPN, it's natural that her
go-to stress reliever involves physical activity. She suggests:
" Going for a long walk preferably with some uphill stretches
without any of your multiple devices! It forces you to take a
moment for yourself and you don't need any equipment but
your sneakers! "
21. Sarah Kirshbaum Levy
COO, Global Entertainment Group
Viacom
Levy became COO of Viacom's Global
Entertainment Group earlier this year
and is tasked with fostering collaboration
within the company's brand portfolio.
Working closely with CEO Bob
Bakish, Levy implemented organizational changes to encourage
idea-sharing aimed at improving operations and creativity
across brands and departments. She also has led external
collaboration efforts to improve the company's relationships
with consumers and industry partners. Going forward, she'll be
expected to grow several of Viacom's most visible brands as
she did during her years at Nickelodeon.
22. Lori Conkling
EVP, Strategy & Business Development
NBCUniversal
NBCUniversal continues to expand
its reach into the digital space, with
Conkling lending a hand. She was
involved with the company's reported
$500 million investment this spring in
Snap. Conkling and her team developed the business case
and helped craft the deal's commercial partnership terms.
Asked how the industry can evolve to rid itself of gender
discrimination, Conkling says, " We must continue to recruit,
mentor and promote women in this industry. There should always
be a running list of women in your network that you can
recommend for senior level jobs that you are made aware of. "
23. Courteney Monroe
CEO
National Geographic Global Networks
Nat Geo has had a tremendous year,
and much of that can be attributed
to Monroe's leadership. She helped
initiate the largest rebrand in the
network's history last November with
a focus on premium scripted content. Her commitment to
developing and producing content in collaboration with A-level
creative talent has brought success to the network, including
the premiere of its first-ever scripted anthology series " Genius "
this April. " Genius " quickly became the most-viewed series in
the channel's history. Monroe has instilled in those she works
with the power of storytelling and its ability to change the
world and start global conversations. She mentors several
young women within the industry and advises them to never
get distracted or deterred by gender, as no one can argue with
good, hard work.
24. Sarah Barnett
President & GM
BBC America
With Barnett as its champion, BBC
America was the fastest-growing
entertainment network in the first two
quarters of 2017. " Planet Earth II "
garnered 10 Emmy noms, the network
saw 13% growth over the prior year and became a top
5 social media brand across all of ad-supported TV on the
wings of dramas like " Orphan Black " and " Dirk Gently's Holistic
Detective Agency. " Not to mention the upcoming next
incarnation of " Doctor Who. " Barnett says " slow and messy
commitment " is the best way to achieve gender parity in the
industry, which needs to " fess up and admit our prejudice
around gender-and ethnicity. Then pay attention and learn
how to correct for it. "
